A 3-year-old boy died from injuries suffered Thursday at approximately 4:06 p.m on Jan. 28, when the car in which he was riding collided with an SUV on a wet road in Somerset in El Dorado County.

The 3-year-old boy died after a two car-collision when the car being driven by Jacob Jimenez, 43, of Somerset at 4 p.m. was southbound on Mt. Aukum Road, north of Outingdale Road, according to the California Highway Patrol. The Jimenez lost control of his car and traveled into the oncoming lane. The right side of the car hit the front end of a northbound SUV.

The boy, who was in a child’s safety seat in the right rear of the car, died. Jimenez suffered major injuries and was transported to Marshall Hospital. The SUV driver suffered minor injuries. Jimenez was driving a 1994 gold Lexus southbound on Mt. Aukum Road, north of Outingdale Road when the vehicle swerved into the northbound traffic lane and struck a 1986 brown Ford Bronco driven by Thomas Hoagland, according to CHP officials.

The right side of the Lexus made impact with the front end of the Bronco. The young victim was in a child safety seat in the right rear side of the Lexus. Jimenez sustained major injuries and was taken via helicopter to Sutter Roseville. He was listed in critical condition as of Friday. Hoagland sustained minor injuries and was transported to Marshall Medical Center.

The 1994 Lexus sedan driven by Jimenez had tires in poor condition. “After further investigation of the Lexus, it was observed the tires were in poor condition with limited tread depth. At the time of the collision the roadway was wet,” said CHP officer Quinn Cuthbertson. “The California Highway Patrol can not overemphasize the importance of keeping your vehicle properly maintained, especially during the rainy season. Make sure your tires are in good condition, you windshield wipers are working properly, drive with your headlights on when it is raining or foggy and slow down. It’s not worth the life of your or anyone else’s child.”
