Christmas 2017 -- Merry Christmas

by Placerville Newswire / Dec 25, 2017 / comments

At this special time of year, we give thanks for Christ's message of love and mercy, and we are reminded of our responsibility to serve.  El Dorado County is blessed to have fine citizens who reach out with a compassionate hand to help brothers and sisters in need.

The vast majority of Americans who observe Christmas, this day and season are a time for us to celebrate the fact that God exists and is with us. Saying 'Merry Christmas' allows us to celebrate that fact with joy and lets us share this joy with our loved ones and neighbors.

Christmas is a time to rejoice and remember the birth of Jesus Christ.  "'I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.  Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.  This will be a sign to you:  You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.'" Luke 2:10-12

During the Christmas season, our thoughts turn to the source of joy and hope born in a humble manger on a holy night more than 2,000 years ago.  Each year, Christians everywhere celebrate this single life that changed the world and continues to change hearts today.  The simple and inspiring story of the birth of Jesus fills our souls with gratitude for the many blessings in our lives and promises that God's purpose is justice and His plan is peace. Each year, Christmas brings together families, friends, and communities to celebrate the wonderful gifts God has bestowed upon us.  During this season, we remember Jesus' birth from the Virgin Mary, His justice and mercy that changed the world, and His ultimate sacrifice for all people.

This holiday season, as you rejoice in the good news of Jesus' love, forgiveness, acceptance, and peace, I encourage you to show grace to those less fortunate, just as God showed it to us.

By serving those in need and through other acts of love and compassion, we can honor God's goodness and affirm the immeasurable value God places on the sanctity of life.

One of my favorite things to hear around Christmas is, “Put the ‘Christ’ back in ‘Christmas.’” Truthfully, I love the idea of it because I happen to love Christ and I would love for Christians to appreciate the gift of Christ in their lives as much as gifts under the tree.
