Scam targeting users of CalWORKS and CalFresh

The is a current scam in California that targets people enrolled in public assistance programs in the state. Though there are no known victims in El Dorado County, the Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) would like to let all users of electronic benefit transfer (EBT) cards to be on the lookout for potential scammers using text messaging.

The scam involves clients receiving a text message about their public assistance benefit that instructs them to call a number. When the client calls the number on the text message they are prompted by an automated system to “register their EBT card” or they won’t have access to their benefits. Victims of the scam in some counties in California have entered their EBT card number, PIN and social security number, leaving themselves open to potential identify theft or benefits being stolen. Programs targeted by the scammers appear to include CalWORKs and CalFresh, though other public assistance programs may also be targeted.

El Dorado County HHSA administers several public assistance programs for people in El Dorado County, including CalWORKs and CalFresh. HHSA reminds those with EBT cards to safeguard their personal information, account passwords and other private information. ...

"Revenge Porn" Gets Man One Year in Prison

A man was found guilty of violating a domestic violence restraining order by a jury in El Dorado County on November 1, 2017.

Daniel Ramirez Rios, 43, violated a domestic violence restraining order and one count of intentionally distributing the images of the intimate body parts of another person – also known as “revenge porn.” Mr. Rios was remanded into custody after the jury’s verdict was announced.

In 2013, Rios was convicted in El Dorado County of one count of misdemeanor domestic violence and one count of misdemeanor child abuse and endangerment. The victims in that case were Mr. Rios’s wife and minor daughter. After that conviction, Mr. Rios was sentenced to a three year term of probation and 30 days in county jail. The Court in that case also issued a protective order which prohibited Mr. Rios from contacting his wife and daughter. ...
