Bill seeks stricter charges for those who injure police dogs

[KCRA Sacramento]

A proposed bill would make it a mandatory felony to intentionally kill or seriously injure a police dog or horse in the line of duty.

Right now, a district attorney can file either misdemeanor or felony charges.

California Sen. Ted Gaines, R-El Dorado Hills, is behind the bill. He said police dogs are important members of a department and they deserve more protection because they save lives.

“They are protecting against drugs. They are able to find a missing person. They're able to find maybe someone that's been killed. But also at the same time protecting citizens so that in certain situations you could use that K-9 dog versus something that would be considered more serious,” Gaines said.

Gaines said 10 police dogs have been killed in the line of duty in California over the past five years.
