FAIRFIELD — Former U.S. Attorney General Edwin Meese said Monday that Steven Bailey, running for attorney general of California in the 2018 election, will end the state office’s recent status as “a mouthpiece for extremist social causes.”

Meese, speaking at the Jelly Belly Candy Company, said several recent state attorneys general have turned the office into “a political power base for liberals and leftist politicians.”

“We need a new attorney general,” Meese said.
