Opinion - Parents Need To Know

Daily news stories about the teachings in public schools and universities should be setting off alarms in the heads of parents and taxpayers. I sat in disbelief last week when it was reported that the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) was providing an Islamic Education Program for our nations schools.

Then, also learning, that the Public Broadcasting System (PBS) provides Islamic education on its PBS Learning Media website, however finding no other instructional materials offered for Judaism, Hinduism or Christianity.

All at a time in our country where sports coaches have been demonized for gathering their schools' team players for saying a blessing or a prayer before their game....not to mention others being criticized for saying the word "God" or referencing any form of patriotism during a commencement address.

Yet, with the DOE Islamic Education Program, children are asked or told to complete such assignments as; "explore and understand the basic beliefs of Islam as well as the Five Pillars that guide Muslims in their daily life; belief, fasting, almsgiving and pilgrimage."
    *  "...focus on learning about the core duties of a Muslim..."
    *  "...read what it means to proclaim faith or belief as a Muslim..."

In addition, students are expected to correctly understand and ask questions such as:
    *  "Describe the process that Muslims go through to prepare to pray."
    *  "What do the prayers sound like?"
    *  "What do the movements look like?"
    *  "What are some of the things that Muslims say during prayer?"

The lesson plan is designed for students in grades  5 through 12.

The PBS Learning Media offers crossword or word search puzzles. For example: Kindergartners are asked to find the words; "Islam", "EID" and "Allah", then shown an example in a sentence: "EID Al Allah, is Islamic for Feast of the Sacrifice."

Parents need to pay attention to their child's schools curriculum. For parents whose children are nearing the time to file their applications for college, you may want to check the "Professor Watch List" website, a project of Turning Point USA,  whose mission is to "expose and document college professors who discriminate against conservative students and advocate leftist propaganda in the classroom." One can access a lengthy list of professors and U.S. colleges and universities on this website.

More bells and whistles went off in my head when I read a report by Judicial Watch, where the IRS recently granted tax exempt status to the "After School Satan Club" at  Point Defiance Elementary School in Tacoma, Washington. Remember the IRS tax scandal under the Obama Administration, delaying or denying that same tax exemption for conservative or Christian organizations?

I implore parents and families to raise your awareness level. It is all our responsibility to protect the young minds of our nation, and I am not talking about the Snowflakes who demand safe zones to protect themselves from free speech.
