[El Dorado County District Attorney]

On May 11, 2018, defendant Richard James Petersen, age 35, will be sentenced to County Prison for up to 7 years, 8 months for fraudulent use of another person's credit and debit cards.  Due to the State's "Public Safety Realignment Act" of 2011, that sentence will be served in the County Jail.

On December 5, 2016, the victim lost his wallet.  Later that evening, the victim's bank contacted him about suspicious activity showing on his credit and debit cards at several locations in El Dorado County.  The victim reported the crime to the Sheriff's Office. In response, EDSO deputies were able to obtain transaction records and video surveillance of several of the fraudulent purchases. Through their investigation they were able to identify and arrest the defendant.

The defendant has multiple prior convictions for drug related offenses and conspiracy to commit a crime. In addition, the defendant admitted multiple prior felony convictions, which may increase his sentence.
