Students Receive Excellence in Education Awards at the Fair

At the end of every school year, the El Dorado County Office of Education (EDCOE) gives Excellence in Education Awards to students who have demonstrated their commitment to learning, becoming well-rounded, and giving back. More than 5,000 students received an award certificate and a complimentary pass to the El Dorado County Fair, where they received additional prizes and struck a pose in the photo booth. Individual schools determined criteria to recognize up to 20 percent of their student body. The criteria may have included scholastic achievement, outstanding citizenship, significant educational improvement, athletics, performing arts, community service, attendance, and more.

Kylie Gilberaith was in prekindergarten at the EDCOE Ken Lowry Child Development Center in Placerville, visited the booth when the fair first opened, and proudly exchanged her winning ticket for a bag of goodies. “She was so excited when she woke up this morning. She said ‘Let’s go to the fair mommy, I won!’ This is a great program for the children,” Kylie’s mom, Jennifer, explained.

The EDCOE booth also served as a resource for families regarding local education, complete with an interactive living history kiosk from the El Dorado County Libraries. County Superintendent of Schools Ed Manansala, Ed.D. also worked at the fair and expressed, “I would like to thank the volunteers, staff, educators, and administrators from EDCOE and the school districts whose volunteer efforts made this booth a success. This program would not be possible without them or our sponsors – Carter-Kelly Inc., DST Output, Girard & Edwards, Ski Air Inc., and Valley Pizza Inc. – Round Table Pizza.”

After striking a pose in the photo booth with family and friends, hundreds of award winners keep one commemorative photo strip and place the other on a display board to represent their school district.
