Ukrainian and Eastern European folk music brings new songs to Placerville

An evening of Ukrainian and Eastern European folk music will accompany the CD release of Raven and Rose’s “Coin of the Realm Orchestra” album on Saturday, March 26 at H.Art Lounge, 304 Main St. in Placerville, starting at 7 p.m. The gypsy-folk duo is traveling through Placerville as part of its cross-country 25-city spring tour. The show is free and donations are invited.

Raven and Rose’s live shows strike a balance between original pieces and spirited instrumentals, putting a modern spin on Gypsy and Eastern European folk music. Led by the husband-and-wife team of Rosalie Crowe on violin and singer/songwriter Roy Crowe on accordion, trombone, guitar, melodica, Raven and Rose fills out a unique soundscape from serene and dreamy waltzes to lively and wild kolomeykas.

Since the couple met two years ago, they have been playing together in several other music projects including Unstable Atmosphere, String Rain, “Some Perfect Place” Soundtrack and “Coin of the Realm Orchestra.”

Rosalie’s Polish roots have inspired her focus now on eastern European music. She was mesmerized early on by her uncle Zygmunt Bieniek, who played accordion tunes at gatherings on his farm in Rogówiec, Poland.
