PLACERVILLE, Calif. \u2014 A new mineralogy exhibit honoring one of El Dorado County\u2019s most influential geologists is set to open in February 2026 at The Post Discovery Center in downtown Placerville.<\/p>\n
The George Wheeldon Mineralogy Exhibit<\/strong> commemorates the life and work of George Wheeldon (1937\u20132023), a longtime educator, consulting geologist and public servant whose career spanned more than five decades and helped generations understand the complex geology of the Mother Lode.<\/p>\n The exhibit will be housed inside the original walk-in vault of the historic 1940 WPA-era post office at 515 Main St.<\/strong>, now undergoing restoration by the nonprofit El Dorado Gold 1848<\/strong>. The vault conversion was made possible through a grant from the Latrobe Fund<\/strong>, creating a secure and immersive space for rare mineral displays.<\/p>\n \u201cThis exhibit is about more than rocks,\u201d said a representative of El Dorado Gold 1848 in a prepared statement. \u201cGeorge Wheeldon had an unmatched ability to connect geology to history, land use and community. We\u2019re honored to share that legacy with the public.\u201d<\/p>\n Often referred to locally as the \u201cIndiana Jones of geology,\u201d<\/strong> Wheeldon was a foundational figure in El Dorado County\u2019s scientific community. He taught geology for decades at Folsom Lake College<\/strong> and at local high schools, becoming widely known for his hands-on field trips that introduced students to gold-bearing formations, ancient river channels and volcanic landscapes.<\/p>\n Professionally, Wheeldon founded Wheeldon Geology<\/strong>, a consulting firm specializing in mining history, landslide mapping and environmental investigations. His expertise was frequently sought for projects across the Sierra foothills.<\/p>\n Beyond academia and consulting, Wheeldon served 12 years on the El Dorado Irrigation District Board<\/strong> and was a longtime technical resource for Jeep Jamboree USA<\/strong>, advising on terrain, safety and environmental considerations.<\/p>\n Among his most famous discoveries was a 7,000-pound snowflake obsidian boulder<\/strong>, as well as his extensive research into the Deep Blue Lead<\/strong>\u2014an ancient river channel containing blue clay, significant gold deposits and rare diamonds.<\/p>\n The initial installation will feature the Charles Bishop mineral collection<\/strong>, on loan from the El Dorado County Historical Museum<\/strong>, alongside historic mining maps and photographs that contextualize the county\u2019s mining past.<\/p>\n The exhibit will also highlight the geological forces that shaped the region, including three major volcanic flows occurring approximately 30, 20 and 10 million years ago<\/strong>, which played a critical role in forming the Mother Lode\u2019s gold-bearing veins and buried river channels.<\/p>\n El Dorado County\u2019s lesser-known mineral wealth will also be explored, including diamonds discovered in the Smith Flat basin<\/strong> and the area\u2019s complex metamorphic rock structures.<\/p>\n The Post Discovery Center will host special open houses from 1 to 4 p.m.<\/strong>, with featured presentations at 2 p.m.<\/strong>, on the following dates in 2026:<\/p>\n February 7 and 21<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n March 7 and 21<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n April 4<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n Scheduled speakers include:<\/p>\n Brandon Badeker<\/strong>, El Dorado County geologist<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Rich Dvoracek<\/strong>, geologist and anthropologist<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Jill Kearney<\/strong>, local historian<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Mark Dayton<\/strong>, representing Brass Medic and the Gold Country Treasure Seekers club<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Dee Owens<\/strong>, historian and archivist<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n Organizers say the rotating roster of presenters reflects Wheeldon\u2019s interdisciplinary approach, blending geology, history and community knowledge.<\/p>\n By situating the exhibit inside the building\u2019s original vault, organizers hope to create a sense of discovery that mirrors Wheeldon\u2019s own career.<\/p>\n \u201cGeorge believed geology should be experienced, not just studied,\u201d the nonprofit said. \u201cThis exhibit invites visitors to step inside the story of El Dorado County\u2014literally and figuratively.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" A walk-in vault.
