{"id":11843,"date":"2026-03-11T19:31:29","date_gmt":"2026-03-12T03:31:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/inedc.com\/24\/?p=11843"},"modified":"2026-03-11T19:31:29","modified_gmt":"2026-03-12T03:31:29","slug":"global-scientists-gather-at-lake-tahoe-to-protect-the-worlds-largest-trout","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/inedc.com\/24\/news\/global-scientists-gather-at-lake-tahoe-to-protect-the-worlds-largest-trout\/","title":{"rendered":"Global Scientists Gather at Lake Tahoe to Protect the World\u2019s Largest Trout"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"608\" data-end=\"824\"><strong data-start=\"608\" data-end=\"628\">LAKE TAHOE, Nev.<\/strong> \u2014 Scientists from around the world gathered last week at the <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">University of Nevada, Reno<\/span><\/span> to address an unusual conservation challenge: how to protect the largest trout species on Earth.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"826\" data-end=\"1092\">The three-day workshop brought international researchers to the shores of <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Lake Tahoe<\/span><\/span>, where they examined threats facing giant trout species found across Europe and Asia while drawing lessons from the region\u2019s own history with native fish.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1094\" data-end=\"1501\">On a bright but chilly afternoon at <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Tahoe City Marina<\/span><\/span>, scientists boarded <em data-start=\"1188\" data-end=\"1197\">Liberty<\/em>, a research vessel operated by the university. The boat is part of UNR\u2019s fleet used to collect environmental data, study water clarity and monitor lake conditions. University officials say a second, larger research vessel capable of carrying up to 15 people is expected to join the fleet this September.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1503\" data-end=\"1663\">As the boat moved into deeper water, research professor <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Zeb Hogan<\/span><\/span> said the location carried special significance for the discussion.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1665\" data-end=\"1941\">\u201cAnd so we\u2019ve come together to try to share information, to try to figure out ways to better protect these fish,\u201d Hogan said. \u201cOne of the reasons why being out here on Tahoe is so relevant is that Lake Tahoe used to be home to North America\u2019s largest cutthroat trout species.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1943\" data-end=\"2279\">That fish \u2014 the <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Lahontan cutthroat trout<\/span><\/span> \u2014 once thrived in Lake Tahoe but disappeared from the lake by the 1930s. Overfishing, habitat loss and the introduction of non-native species drove the population\u2019s collapse. Today the trout still survives in isolated locations across Nevada, including Pyramid Lake and Summit Lake.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2281\" data-end=\"2598\">The Tahoe workshop focused on five species of giant trout in the genera <em data-start=\"2353\" data-end=\"2360\">Hucho<\/em> and <em data-start=\"2365\" data-end=\"2376\">Parahucho<\/em>, collectively known as taimen. These fish inhabit rivers across Mongolia, Russia, Japan, China and parts of Eastern Europe and can grow to massive sizes, making them among the largest freshwater fish in the salmon family.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2600\" data-end=\"2922\">Participants included researchers from Europe, Mongolia, China, Japan and Russia, along with scientists from universities across the United States. A representative from the <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Summit Lake Paiute Tribe<\/span><\/span> also joined the workshop to provide insight into ongoing efforts to protect Nevada\u2019s Lahontan cutthroat trout.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2924\" data-end=\"3160\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Matthew Sloat<\/span><\/span>, science director at the <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Wild Salmon Center<\/span><\/span>, said protecting giant trout does not require perfect knowledge \u2014 but it does require identifying the most critical conservation steps.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3162\" data-end=\"3311\">\u201cWe don\u2019t need to know everything about these fish,\u201d Sloat said. \u201cBut we want to know the essentials for keeping them around for future generations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3313\" data-end=\"3619\">Across the globe, scientists say large trout face similar threats, including dam construction, climate change and unsustainable fishing pressure.
