Placerville, CA –<\/strong> Michael Edward Raffety, the retired long-term editor of The Mountain Democrat, passed away on April 28, 2024, at UC Davis Hospital in Sacramento. He was 77 years old. Mike, as he was affectionately known, is survived by his wife of 43 years, Cherie Raffety; his daughter Natasha Santos of Plymouth; his son Wolfgang Raffety; son-in-law Peter Santos; daughter-in-law Rortveaktey Raffety; and five grandsons: Alex, Evan, Leonidas, Michael, and Lorenzo.<\/p>\n

From Berlin to America: A Remarkable Journey<\/strong><\/p>\n

Born on October 23, 1946, in Berlin, Germany, Mike’s early life was marked by the struggles of post-World War II Europe. His birth mother, facing severe hardships, made the heart-wrenching decision to put him up for adoption. Amidst the U.S. efforts to provide aid to Germany through the Berlin Airlift, Mike found a new home with Charles A. and Lois F. Raffety. They brought him to the United States, where his new mother nursed him back to health. By the eighth grade, Mike became a naturalized citizen, embracing his new country with enthusiasm.<\/p>\n

A Life of Service: Navy and Beyond<\/strong><\/p>\n

After high school, Mike joined the Navy, where he trained in electronics on the East Coast before embarking on tours in the Mediterranean and even the South Pole. His time in the Navy was filled with adventure, experiences he cherished deeply.<\/p>\n

Following his military service, Mike pursued his passion for photography and education. He settled in California, studying art, art history, and photography, eventually earning several degrees, including a master’s from California State University.<\/p>\n

Love and Dedication: Family and Career<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mike’s career at The Mountain Democrat began when he interviewed Cherie Albusche, then a candidate for the Los Rios Community College Board of Trustees. Their professional encounter blossomed into a romance, and they married on October 18, 1980, shortly after Cherie’s election victory. Mike was a devoted family man, balancing his demanding career with active participation in his children’s lives. He attended countless sports games, 4-H meetings, and family vacations, always finding time for his loved ones despite his busy schedule.<\/p>\n

Community Commitment: Service and Leadership<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mike’s commitment extended beyond his family to his community. He served as an American Legion Commander and President of the Mother Lode Lions Club, passionately supporting projects for children and eyesight, including securing playground equipment for Indian Creek School and aiding the mobile eyesight van initiative. His efforts reflected his deep care for others and his desire to make a positive impact.<\/p>\n

A Life Well-Lived: Travel and Exploration<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mike and Cherie shared a love for travel, exploring the world together. From the vibrant theaters of New York City to the art museums of Paris and the historic Hermitage in Saint Petersburg, their adventures were numerous. They also enjoyed a walking tour of Japan’s gardens and let their children choose destinations in England, Spain, and Portugal. Despite their global travels, Mike always cherished returning to the Sierra Nevada foothills, where he felt most at home.<\/p>\n

Celebration of Life<\/strong><\/p>\n

A Celebration of Life for Michael Raffety will be held on Saturday, May 25, at 11 a.m. at the Episcopal Church of Our Saviour, 2979 Coloma St., Placerville. Due to limited parking, attendees are encouraged to park on Spring Street. Following the service, a reception will be held at noon at the Mother Lode Lions Hall, 4701 Missouri Flat Road in Diamond Springs. Friends and family are invited to gather and honor Mike’s remarkable life.<\/p>\n
