El Dorado Hills (Dec 24, 2024) – In a heartbreaking turn of events, the collapse of the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf has taken more than wood and steel\u2014it has displaced the sacred ground of a family\u2019s cherished memories. Among those mourning the loss is El Dorado Hills resident Ruby Shields, whose mother\u2019s memorial bench was swept into the ocean during Monday\u2019s collapse.<\/p>\n

The bench, dedicated to Kim Nellany-Shields, who passed away in 1994, served as a beacon of remembrance for the Shields family and strangers alike. From 180 miles away, Ruby learned of the disaster through a drone video shared on Reddit, an experience she likened to \u201ca graveyard being hit by a tornado.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was there for everyone to feel closer to her,\u201d Ruby said. For her family, the bench overlooking the ocean wasn\u2019t just a seat\u2014it was her mother\u2019s gravesite in spirit.<\/p>\n

Driven by empathy, the two strangers combed the beach after seeing Ruby\u2019s desperate Reddit post.<\/p>\n

\u201cProbably because I\u2019ve been through something similar, it landed differently,\u201d said Walsh, who also lost a parent and has her father\u2019s original memorial bench in her yard.<\/p>\n

The trio\u2019s paths converged serendipitously when Polay encountered Walsh carrying the nameplate. \u201cI was just standing there for 30 seconds,\u201d Polay recounted, \u201cand she walked by with it.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Christmas Reunion<\/h3>\n

Ruby plans to meet Walsh on Christmas Day to retrieve the nameplate, a poignant moment underscoring the spirit of human kindness.<\/p>\n
