It operates as a living museum under the <strong data-start=\"167\" data-end=\"205\">El Dorado County Historical Museum<\/strong>, preserving and showcasing the region\u2019s rich railroad history.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"270\" data-end=\"298\"><strong data-start=\"274\" data-end=\"298\">History &amp; Background<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"299\" data-end=\"853\">\n<li data-start=\"299\" data-end=\"502\">The <strong data-start=\"305\" data-end=\"335\">El Dorado Western Railroad<\/strong> follows the path of the original <strong data-start=\"369\" data-end=\"408\">Southern Pacific Placerville Branch<\/strong>, which was built in the 1860s to connect Sacramento to the gold rush town of <strong data-start=\"486\" data-end=\"501\">Placerville<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"503\" data-end=\"629\">The line was <strong data-start=\"518\" data-end=\"531\">abandoned<\/strong> in stages throughout the 20th century, and by the late 1990s, it had ceased commercial operation.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"630\" data-end=\"853\">The County of El Dorado acquired the rail corridor to preserve it for future use, and in 2008, the <strong data-start=\"731\" data-end=\"769\">El Dorado County Historical Museum<\/strong> formed the El Dorado Western Railroad to restore and operate a portion of the line.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-start=\"855\" data-end=\"886\"><strong data-start=\"859\" data-end=\"886\">Operations &amp; Activities<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"887\" data-end=\"1328\">\n<li data-start=\"887\" data-end=\"1057\">The EDWRR offers <strong data-start=\"906\" data-end=\"931\">excursion train rides<\/strong> between <strong data-start=\"940\" data-end=\"953\">El Dorado<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"958\" data-end=\"977\">Shingle Springs<\/strong>, allowing visitors to experience the historic railway aboard vintage motorcars.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1058\" data-end=\"1193\">Trains typically operate on <strong data-start=\"1088\" data-end=\"1106\">select Sundays<\/strong>, using restored <strong data-start=\"1123\" data-end=\"1144\">Fairmont railcars<\/strong> (speeder cars) instead of full-size locomotives.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1194\" data-end=\"1328\">The railroad is staffed and maintained entirely by <strong data-start=\"1247\" data-end=\"1261\">volunteers<\/strong> who restore equipment, maintain the track, and operate the trains.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-start=\"1330\" data-end=\"1363\"><strong data-start=\"1334\" data-end=\"1363\">Equipment &amp; Rolling Stock<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul data-start=\"1364\" data-end=\"1613\">\n<li data-start=\"1364\" data-end=\"1518\">The primary rolling stock includes <strong data-start=\"1401\" data-end=\"1429\">Fairmont A4 Speeder Cars<\/strong>, which were historically used by railroad workers for track inspections and maintenance.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1519\" data-end=\"1613\">Restoration efforts are ongoing, with hopes of eventually running larger trains on the line.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-start=\"1615\" data-end=\"1651\"><strong data-start=\"1619\" data-end=\"1651\">Community &amp;
