(April 6, 2025)\u00a0 \u2014\u00a0 In the annals of exploration, certain figures stand out not merely for their discoveries but for the spirit with which they pursued them. <span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem]\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsmolo.com\/EDC\/2019\/2021\/01\/19\/hernando-de-alarcon\/\">Hernando de Alarc\u00f3n<\/a>, a Spanish navigator of the 16th century, is one such individual whose journey up the Colorado River in 1540 marked a significant chapter in the chronicles of the New World.<\/span>\u200b<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"221\" data-end=\"492\"><span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem]\">Born around 1500 in Trujillo, Spain, Alarc\u00f3n&#8217;s early life remains shrouded in mystery.<\/span> <span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem]\">Yet, it was his expedition in support of Francisco V\u00e1zquez de Coronado&#8217;s quest for the fabled Seven Cities of Cibola that etched his name into history.<\/span> <span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem]\">Commissioned by Viceroy Antonio de Mendoza, Alarc\u00f3n set sail from Acapulco on May 9, 1540, commanding the San Pedro and the Santa Catalina.<\/span> <span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem]\">Their mission was clear: to navigate the Gulf of California and provide logistical support to Coronado&#8217;s overland expedition.<\/span> <span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem]\">Along the way, they were joined by a third vessel, the San Gabriel, at St. Jago de Buena Esperanza in Colima.<\/span> \u200b<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"494\" data-end=\"777\"><span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem]\">The rendezvous with Coronado&#8217;s forces, however, never materialized.<\/span> <span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem]\">Undeterred, Alarc\u00f3n pressed on, venturing to the northern reaches of the Gulf of California.<\/span> <span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem]\">It was here, on September 26, 1540, that he entered the mouth of a great river, which he christened the &#8220;R\u00edo de Nuestra Se\u00f1ora del Buen Gu\u00eda,&#8221; now known as the Colorado River.<\/span> <span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem]\">With determination, he ascended its waters, becoming the first European to do so.<\/span> <span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem]\">His journey likely took him beyond the present-day site of Yuma, Arizona, and perhaps even into territories that would later be recognized as part of Alta California.<\/span> \u200b<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"779\" data-end=\"1024\"><span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem]\">What sets Alarc\u00f3n apart from many of his contemporaries was his approach to the indigenous peoples he encountered.<\/span> <span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem]\">In an era often marred by conquest and subjugation, Alarc\u00f3n&#8217;s interactions were notably humane.<\/span> <span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem]\">He took the time to document their customs, beliefs, and ways of life, offering invaluable insights into cultures that were previously unknown to Europeans.<\/span> <span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem]\">This respect fostered mutual understanding, leading historian Bernard DeVoto to remark that the indigenous communities &#8220;were sorry to see these white men leave.&#8221;<\/span> \u200b<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1026\" data-end=\"1191\"><span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem]\">Alarc\u00f3n&#8217;s legacy is commemorated by California Historical Landmark No. 568, located near Andrade in Imperial County.<\/span> <span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem]\">This marker honors his expedition as the first non-Indigenous group to sight land within what is now the state of California.<\/span> \u200b<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1193\" data-end=\"1278\"><span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem]\">Through treacherous waters and uncharted territories, Hernando de Alarc\u00f3n&#8217;s journey exemplifies the relentless pursuit of knowledge and the spirit of exploration that defined an era.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Before Lewis and Clark, there was Alarc\u00f3n.
