(July 1, 2025)<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"761\" data-end=\"1129\"><strong data-start=\"761\" data-end=\"784\">PLACERVILLE, Calif.<\/strong> \u2014<br data-start=\"786\" data-end=\"789\" \/>On the morning of <strong data-start=\"807\" data-end=\"823\">July 1, 1864<\/strong>, a burst of gunfire echoed through Somerset as <strong data-start=\"871\" data-end=\"896\">Deputy Joseph Staples<\/strong>, 38, burst into a hotel room shouting, <em data-start=\"936\" data-end=\"969\">\u201cYou men are all my prisoners!\u201d<\/em> Moments later, the first El Dorado County deputy sheriff to die in the line of duty was mortally wounded, his sacrifice forever etched in the county\u2019s history.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1131\" data-end=\"1529\">Staples and <strong data-start=\"1143\" data-end=\"1170\">Constable George Ranney<\/strong> had tracked a group of Confederate-aligned outlaws who had robbed two <strong data-start=\"1241\" data-end=\"1263\">Pioneer Stage Line<\/strong> coaches near Bullion Bend the night before. The robbers, led by <strong data-start=\"1328\" data-end=\"1344\">Thomas Poole<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"1349\" data-end=\"1364\">Ralph Henry<\/strong>, made off with over <strong data-start=\"1385\" data-end=\"1414\">$40,000 in silver bullion<\/strong>, looted from shipments traveling west from <strong data-start=\"1458\" data-end=\"1483\">Virginia City, Nevada<\/strong>, through the Sierra foothills to Placerville.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1531\" data-end=\"1708\">Following their brazen heist, the gang took shelter at the <strong data-start=\"1590\" data-end=\"1608\">Somerset House<\/strong>, a hotel perched on the north fork of the Cosumnes River. That\u2019s where Staples made his last stand.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"1710\" data-end=\"1945\">\n<p data-start=\"1712\" data-end=\"1945\">\u201cHe charged the room knowing what waited on the other side,\u201d said El Dorado County Sheriff\u2019s historian <strong data-start=\"1815\" data-end=\"1835\">Sgt. Eric Carter<\/strong>, who curated the department\u2019s recent tribute. \u201cHe didn&#8217;t flinch\u2014he was defending the law, and his community.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"1947\" data-end=\"2261\">The bandits, calling themselves <strong data-start=\"1979\" data-end=\"2008\">Ingram\u2019s Partisan Rangers<\/strong>, were Confederate sympathizers dressed in gray uniforms\u2014a stark reminder of the <strong data-start=\"2089\" data-end=\"2111\">Civil War tensions<\/strong> reaching even into California\u2019s mining towns. Their mission, as they saw it, was to disrupt Union bullion shipments and bankroll a Western rebellion.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2263\" data-end=\"2622\">Constable Ranney survived the gunfight, though seriously wounded. The outlaws fled, but with a price on their heads, they were captured seven weeks later in <strong data-start=\"2420\" data-end=\"2442\">Santa Clara County<\/strong>. Poole stood trial for the murder of Staples and was hanged at the <strong data-start=\"2510\" data-end=\"2533\">Placerville Gallows<\/strong> on <strong data-start=\"2537\" data-end=\"2559\">September 29, 1865<\/strong>. One other was sentenced to 20 years; the rest were acquitted.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2624\" data-end=\"2891\">Staples was buried on <strong data-start=\"2646\" data-end=\"2662\">July 2, 1864<\/strong>, in the <strong data-start=\"2671\" data-end=\"2701\">Placerville Union Cemetery<\/strong>. His funeral was well attended by residents from <strong data-start=\"2751\" data-end=\"2761\">Coloma<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2763\" data-end=\"2778\">Placerville<\/strong>, county officials, volunteer firefighters, and what the local newspaper described as \u201ca large number of ladies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2893\" data-end=\"3065\">In 1916, a <strong data-start=\"2904\" data-end=\"2922\">granite marker<\/strong> was erected near <strong data-start=\"2940\" data-end=\"2957\">Pollock Pines<\/strong>, memorializing Deputy Staples and the dramatic events of what became known as the <strong data-start=\"3040\" data-end=\"3064\">Bullion Bend Robbery<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3067\" data-end=\"3211\">His was the only death in the line of duty by gunfire in El Dorado County until <strong data-start=\"3147\" data-end=\"3171\">Deputy Brian Ishmael<\/strong> was killed in 2019\u2014<strong data-start=\"3191\" data-end=\"3210\">155 years later<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"3213\" data-end=\"3216\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"3218\" data-end=\"3250\">Civil War Reaches the Sierra<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3252\" data-end=\"3490\">California was officially a Union state, but Confederate sentiment simmered in rural Gold Rush communities. The robbers viewed themselves not just as criminals, but as agents of Southern resistance\u2014\u201cpartisan rangers\u201d in enemy territory.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3492\" data-end=\"3584\">Still, to the people of El Dorado County, the robbery was a direct assault on law and order.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"3586\" data-end=\"3589\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"3591\" data-end=\"3618\">Legacy of a Fallen Hero<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3620\" data-end=\"3862\">Today, Deputy Joseph Staples remains a symbol of <strong data-start=\"3669\" data-end=\"3707\">duty, sacrifice, and moral resolve<\/strong>. His name is engraved on both the <strong data-start=\"3742\" data-end=\"3787\">El Dorado County Peace Officers\u2019 Memorial<\/strong> and the <strong data-start=\"3796\" data-end=\"3842\">National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial<\/strong> in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3864\" data-end=\"4070\">Sheriff\u2019s deputies, local historians, and residents continue to honor his memory, recognizing that in charging that room on July 1, 1864, Staples wasn&#8217;t just enforcing the law\u2014he was defining what it meant.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"266\">Here is a <strong data-start=\"22\" data-end=\"47\">stage play adaptation<\/strong> of <em data-start=\"51\" data-end=\"86\">\u201cThe Last Ride of Deputy Staples\u201d<\/em>, written as a <strong data-start=\"101\" data-end=\"129\">one-act historical drama<\/strong>.
