(July\u202f8,\u202f2025)<\/strong> \u2014 The sweeping forests of El\u202fDorado County once powered more than just mining \u2014 they fueled California\u2019s earliest industrial infrastructure. A new report by the El\u202fDorado County Historical Museum traces the county\u2019s timber journey from frontier charcoal to mechanized rail logging, shaping foothill communities and engineering marvels along the way.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1567\" data-end=\"1722\"><strong data-start=\"1567\" data-end=\"1599\">Gold Rush sparks timber boom<\/strong><br data-start=\"1599\" data-end=\"1602\" \/><span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem] transition-colors duration-100 ease-in-out\">In January 1848, shortly after gold was discovered at Sutter\u2019s Mill, James W. Marshall built a water\u2011powered sawmill in Coloma\u2014the first in the state\u2014to supply flumes, mine shafts and buildings<\/span>. <span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem] transition-colors duration-100 ease-in-out\">As mining escalated, timber became essential infrastructure and fuel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1724\" data-end=\"1919\"><strong data-start=\"1724\" data-end=\"1755\">From chute to cable tramway<\/strong><br data-start=\"1755\" data-end=\"1758\" \/><span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem] transition-colors duration-100 ease-in-out\">By 1890, logging on the Georgetown Divide began in earnest under American River Land &amp; Lumber Co., delivering logs via chute and narrow\u2011gauge railroad to Folsom<\/span>. <span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem] transition-colors duration-100 ease-in-out\">In 1900, successors moved the mill to Pino Grande, and by 1901, a 2,600\u2011foot aerial cable tramway shuttled rough\u2011cut lumber across the American River to Camino, then to Placerville and beyond via standard\u2011gauge rails<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1921\" data-end=\"2108\"><strong data-start=\"1921\" data-end=\"1944\">Triumph and decline<\/strong><br data-start=\"1944\" data-end=\"1947\" \/><span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem] transition-colors duration-100 ease-in-out\">Mich\u2011Cal operations peaked mid\u201120th century but succumbed after a 1949 fire destroyed the cable\u2019s south terminal. The railroad was dismantled by 1951, and logging pivoted to trucks<\/span> <span class=\"\" data-state=\"closed\"><span class=\"ms-1 inline-flex max-w-full items-center relative top-[-0.094rem] animate-[show_150ms_ease-in]\"><a class=\"flex h-4.5 overflow-hidden rounded-xl px-2 text-[9px] font-medium text-token-text-secondary! bg-[#F4F4F4]! dark:bg-[#303030]! transition-colors duration-150 ease-in-out\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Michigan-California_Lumber_Company?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"relative start-0 bottom-0 flex h-full w-full items-center\"><span class=\"flex h-4 w-full items-center justify-between overflow-hidden\"><span class=\"max-w-full grow truncate overflow-hidden text-center\">en.wikipedia.org<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/span>. <span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem] transition-colors duration-100 ease-in-out\">The Camino mill persisted under Sierra Pacific Industries until the 1990s<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2110\" data-end=\"2471\">\u201c<strong data-start=\"2111\" data-end=\"2158\">The cable tramway was an engineering marvel<\/strong>\u2014a single\u2011car cage moving 17\u2011ton lumber loads a thousand feet above the river,\u201d said <strong data-start=\"2243\" data-end=\"2264\">Steve Polkinghorn<\/strong>, historian and author of <em data-start=\"2290\" data-end=\"2360\">Pino\u202fGrande: Logging Railroads of the Michigan\u2011California Lumber Co.<\/em> Polkinghorn worked with the Sierra Nevada Logging Museum to preserve sections of the cable and mill artifacts.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2473\" data-end=\"2776\"><strong data-start=\"2473\" data-end=\"2491\">Legacy remains<\/strong><br data-start=\"2491\" data-end=\"2494\" \/>Today, visitors can still hike along \u201cCable Road\u201d in Camino to see the tram tower foundation.
