South Lake Tahoe, CA – In a dramatic turn for South Lake Tahoe’s recent political figures, former city council candidate Kevin Edward Brunner, 32, found himself facing drug-related charges in Tahoe Township Justice Court on Thursday. Brunner, who previously ran for office, was taken into custody early Wednesday morning after security at Dotty’s Casino in Stateline recognized him and notified authorities due to his felony probation status for an arson conviction in California.

Brunner’s charges stem from the discovery of 28 grams of methamphetamine and 0.2 grams of fentanyl hidden in his sock, according to prosecutor Bill Murphy. Bail has been set at $3,500 cash or bond. Attorney Brian Filter, representing Brunner, revealed that his client recently underwent major surgery and has a follow-up appointment scheduled in Placerville, citing the potential severity of Brunner’s health condition. “He showed me the scar and it looks like it was major surgery,” Filter informed the court, emphasizing his client’s physical struggles.

Brunner’s legal troubles are not new. Last year, he was convicted of felony vandalism and attempted arson after allegedly breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s apartment and causing property damage. He received probation following the incident, which occurred on October 1, 2022, according to coverage from the Tahoe Daily Tribune.

Casino Embezzlement Case Emerges with a Twist

In a separate case, former Hard Rock Casino cage manager Alberto Jesus Caballero was brought before Douglas County Court on charges of felony embezzlement and theft. Caballero allegedly embezzled $9,000 from the casino in 2021 before leaving the state. After a traffic stop in Texas brought the warrant to light, Caballero was ordered to post a $5,000 bond and required to return to Nevada.

A Golden Nugget representative, the successor to the Hard Rock, expressed concern over Caballero’s potential flight risk, describing the alleged theft as “a calculated effort” rather than an impulsive act. Judge Johnson set his bail at $1,500 cash and mandated that Caballero waive extradition.

Stateline Traffic Stop Leads to Drug Arrests

In yet another Thursday morning incident, San Francisco residents Bradley Howard Mears and Shemeca Renee Cottle were apprehended following a traffic stop for a broken headlight in Stateline. Law enforcement found 9 grams of methamphetamine in their possession, leading to their arrests on drug charges. Judge Johnson set their bail at $2,000 cash or $5,000 bond.

Each of these cases underscores the challenges local authorities face as they confront drug-related crime, probation violations, and alleged thefts in the South Lake Tahoe and Stateline areas. Residents are encouraged to share their thoughts—what do these arrests mean for community safety, and what actions should be taken to address probation compliance and crime prevention in El Dorado County?
