El Dorado County (Nov 17, 2024) – A hiker’s recent rescue near the summit of Mt. Tallac on November 14 serves as a stark reminder of the challenges and risks associated with high-altitude winter hiking in the Tahoe region. According to reports, the hiker was unprepared for the freezing temperatures and lost his way in snowy conditions. A two-person rescue team from El Dorado Search and Rescue (EDSAR) began their mission from Lily Lake at 1 a.m., navigating hazardous and icy trails. They located the hiker hours later by tracking his footprints downhill and using whistles and lights to make contact around 4 a.m. After providing additional warm clothing, the rescuers guided him down the less treacherous Glen Alpine Trail, completing the mission safely by 7:30 a.m.

This incident underscores the importance of preparation when venturing into winter backcountry areas. Snow, even in small amounts, can obscure trails and landmarks, increasing the risk of disorientation. Hikers are urged to carry proper navigation tools, warm clothing, and emergency supplies.
