(INEDC) — Young outdoor enthusiasts have a unique opportunity to showcase their fishing and marksmanship skills in the upcoming Youth Outdoor Contest, a free event hosted by the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office’s S.C.H.I.E.L.D. Youth Program and the California Deer Association’s El Dorado County Chapter.​

The contest, open to elementary, middle, and high school students, runs from April 10 to May 10. Participants will compete in two main events: a fishing competition and an air rifle marksmanship challenge.​

Fishing Competition

From April 10 to May 10, young anglers are encouraged to catch and release black bass. To enter, participants must submit a photo of their catch alongside a ruler or tape measure for length verification. All fishing must comply with California Department of Fish and Wildlife regulations, and contestants are required to catch their own fish.​

Marksmanship Challenge and Awards BBQ

The marksmanship portion of the contest will take place on May 10 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Hagen Ranch, located at 6341 Hagen Ranch Road in El Dorado. Air rifles will be provided for the event, ensuring safety and uniformity among participants.​

Following the shooting competition, a complimentary BBQ and awards ceremony will be held at the same location. Prizes will be awarded to top performers in each age division, with a grand prize for the overall winner.​

Registration Information

The event is entirely free and open to youth regardless of residency; participants do not need to be from El Dorado County. To register, email ericsumers.caldeer@gmail.com. In-person registration is also available at Mosquito Creek Outfitters and Mike’s Barbershop.​

About the Organizers

The S.C.H.I.E.L.D. Youth Program, developed by the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office, aims to foster positive relationships between law enforcement and youth through engagement and education. The California Deer Association is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving deer habitats and populations across the state.​
