(AP)<\/strong> \u2014 <span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem] transition-colors duration-100 ease-in-out\">A South Lake Tahoe man has been arrested on federal charges for allegedly distributing fentanyl that led to the deaths of four individuals in February 2024<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"229\" data-end=\"387\"><span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem] transition-colors duration-100 ease-in-out\">Timothy Austin Pannell, 31, was taken into custody on Friday, April 25, 2025, by a special agent from the FBI&#8217;s Sacramento Field Office.<\/span> <span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem] transition-colors duration-100 ease-in-out\">The arrest was made possible with assistance from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, El Dorado County Probation, and the El Dorado County Sheriff\u2019s Office<\/span> .\u200b<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"389\" data-end=\"591\"><span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem] transition-colors duration-100 ease-in-out\">According to court documents, Pannell, also known as \u201cFrog,\u201d allegedly sold fentanyl\u2014believing it to be cocaine\u2014to two men in the parking lot of a church in South Lake Tahoe on the night of February 11, 2024.<\/span> <span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem] transition-colors duration-100 ease-in-out\">The following day, authorities responded to a 911 call reporting multiple overdoses at a residence on Roger Avenue.<\/span> <span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem] transition-colors duration-100 ease-in-out\">Three men and one woman were found deceased, while a fifth individual survived the overdose<\/span> .\u200b<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"593\" data-end=\"719\"><span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem] transition-colors duration-100 ease-in-out\">The deceased were identified as Abraham Lemus, 32, and Adam Joy, 35, both of South Lake Tahoe; Keely Pereira, 33, of South Lake Tahoe; and Clifford Joy, 37, of Douglas County, Nevada<\/span> .\u200b<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"721\" data-end=\"847\"><span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem] transition-colors duration-100 ease-in-out\">El Dorado County District Attorney Vern Pierson stated that Pannell realized the mistake in selling fentanyl instead of cocaine and made multiple frantic attempts to warn the victims, placing <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"721\" data-end=\"847\"><span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem] transition-colors duration-100 ease-in-out\">\u201cat least 17 unanswered phone calls and later drove through the victim\u2019s neighborhood in an unsuccessful effort to prevent harm\u201d<\/span> .\u200b<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"849\" data-end=\"1015\"><span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem] transition-colors duration-100 ease-in-out\">A probation search of Pannell\u2019s residence uncovered evidence of ongoing drug trafficking, including fentanyl residue, a digital scale, and cash concealed in deceptive containers.<\/span> <span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem] transition-colors duration-100 ease-in-out\">At the time, Pannell was on probation from previous drug charges and was arrested by the South Lake Tahoe Police Department on probation violation charges on March 7, 2024<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1017\" data-end=\"1223\"><span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem] transition-colors duration-100 ease-in-out\">Under current California law, charging Pannell with second-degree implied malice murder was not viable.<\/span> <span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem] transition-colors duration-100 ease-in-out\">To secure such a conviction, prosecutors must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant knowingly acted in conscious disregard for human life.<\/span> <span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem] transition-colors duration-100 ease-in-out\">In this case, Pierson noted that the evidence shows Pannell believed he was distributing cocaine and made efforts to warn the victims upon discovering his mistake, negating the intent required for a murder charge<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1225\" data-end=\"1350\"><span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem] transition-colors duration-100 ease-in-out\">Pannell faces a federal complaint for alleged distribution of fentanyl, a felony.<\/span> <span class=\"relative -mx-px my-[-0.2rem] rounded px-px py-[0.2rem] transition-colors duration-100 ease-in-out\">He is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.<\/span>\u200b<span class=\"\" data-state=\"closed\"><span class=\"ms-1 inline-flex max-w-full items-center relative top-[-0.094rem] animate-[show_150ms_ease-in]\"><a class=\"flex h-4.5 overflow-hidden rounded-xl px-2 text-[0.5625em] font-medium text-token-text-secondary! bg-[#F4F4F4]! dark:bg-[#303030]! transition-colors duration-150 ease-in-out\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/contact-us\/field-offices\/sacramento\/news\/fbi-arrests-alleged-south-lake-tahoe-fentanyl-distributor?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"relative start-0 bottom-0 flex h-full w-full items-center\"><span class=\"flex h-4 w-full items-center justify-between overflow-hidden\"><span class=\"max-w-full grow truncate overflow-hidden text-center\">Federal Bureau of Investigation<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u200bFBI Arrests South Lake Tahoe Man in Connection with Fatal Fentanyl Overdoses\u200b<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":8133,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"jnews-multi-image_gallery":[],"jnews_single_post":{"subtitle":"FBI, Local Agencies Act Swiftly After Deadly Overdose Incident;
