PLACERVILLE, Calif. \u2014 As wagons roll into town for the 76th Annual Highway 50 Wagon Train this Saturday, Placerville\u2019s Golden History Days is drawing both praise and criticism for its broader portrayal of the past. Organizers have woven new historical threads into the event, spotlighting the roles of Native Americans, Black pioneers, Latino Californios, and Asian immigrants\u2014groups long left out of Old West reenactments.<\/p>\n

The inclusion in Placerville, where the town famously removed its “hanging man” noose symbol from its city seal in 2021, these shifts represent a broader effort to reconcile local heritage with contemporary values.<\/p>\n

Still, not everyone is on board.<\/p>\n

\u201cGo woke, go broke,\u201d<\/strong> muttered one longtime resident outside a downtown caf\u00e9 on Main Street. \u201cI just want my Wagon Train, not a sociology lecture.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n
