Point Fire Reported Sunday Morning in El Dorado County

A wildfire now known as the Point Fire was reported Sunday morning, March 15, in El Dorado County, prompting a quick response from fire crews and an investigation into how the blaze began.

According to incident information tracked through the National Interagency Fire Center, the fire was first logged at approximately 10:42 a.m. on private land within the county. Initial reports did not include containment figures or an official acreage estimate as firefighters worked to assess the situation.

Officials advised residents to rely on verified local alert systems while crews continued operations and investigators began examining potential causes. The cause of the ignition remained undetermined as of Monday, March 16.

Regional wildfire tracking systems routinely log incidents such as the Point Fire to help coordinate response efforts between local, state and federal agencies. The incident entry was also noted in reporting by The Sacramento Bee, which cited national fire center data indicating that further details would be released as the investigation continues.

The foothill communities surrounding Placerville and the western slope of the Sierra Nevada have faced destructive wildfires in recent years. Among the most significant was the Mosquito Fire, which burned tens of thousands of acres across Placer County and El Dorado County in 2022.

Fire officials often treat every new ignition as a potential threat, particularly as seasonal conditions begin to shift. A warming trend was forecast for the region beginning March 15, with temperatures expected to remain well above normal through the following weekend.

“Residents should continue to monitor official county alerts and avoid relying on rumors or unofficial reports,” authorities advised in public safety messaging regarding developing incidents.

County officials encourage residents to stay informed through official resources, including the El Dorado County Government emergency alert system and preparedness guidance provided by the El Dorado County Fire Safe Council. The council also offers programs that help homeowners improve defensible space and reduce wildfire risk.

Meanwhile, fuel-reduction work is continuing in other parts of the region. The U.S. Forest Service announced a prescribed burn operation, known as the Liberty 3025 Rx project, scheduled to begin March 16 near Pioneer Trail in the Lake Tahoe Basin. The project will burn approximately 9 acres of pile material to reduce hazardous fuels.

March 15 was also designated a permissible burn day for both the West Slope and South Lake Tahoe areas of El Dorado County.

Officials say additional updates about the Point Fire — including acreage, containment and the official cause — will be released once fire investigators complete their initial assessment.
