POLLOCK PINES, Calif. — A 36% internet rate hike proposed by Comcast could jeopardize a series of vital public safety webcams in El Dorado County, including the long-running Pollock Pines Weather Cam and a newly launched feed at the Cameron Park Airport, according to Z Group Real Estate, the business that operates the webcams.

“These Cameras are a critical resource for our communities, and Comcast’s increase would cost us nearly $3,000 more per year,”

Z Group wrote in a public appeal.

“Please take a moment to contact them and let them know how useful these Cameras are to our communities.”

The Pollock Pines Weather Cam, live since 2007, is one of the most widely viewed independent traffic and weather cameras in the Sierra foothills, used by thousands for checking Highway 50 conditions, storm activity, and wildfire visibility. Its latest sister site, CameronParkWeatherCam.com, was launched at the Cameron Park Airport to provide aviation-related and public visibility monitoring.

Emergency Lifeline in Remote Areas
Residents and emergency responders have long relied on the cameras during blizzards, red flag warnings, and power outages. Their accessibility and live imagery often fill gaps left by official traffic tools and alert systems. During the 2021 Caldor Fire, site traffic to Pollock Pines Weather Cam surged as locals sought real-time information.

“These cameras are not a luxury—they’re a frontline resource for safety and preparedness,”

said one longtime user and Cameron Park resident.

“We check them before we get on the road or make evacuation decisions. This should be supported, not penalized.”

Comcast Silent on Specific Case
Comcast has not yet responded to a request for comment. Historically, the company has cited infrastructure upgrades and regional service demands as reasons for commercial rate increases, though many small businesses argue that such hikes are untenable.

The rate increase is expected to take effect July 1, unless negotiations or appeals are successful. If enforced, Z Group says the cost may force them to scale back the service or seek alternative providers.

Community Mobilizing in Support
Local residents are being encouraged to contact Comcast directly to express the value these webcams provide. Social media posts and neighborhood groups have circulated contact information and template messages asking the telecom giant to reconsider.

“We just want to continue offering this service for free,” Z Group added. “We’re not asking for donations—we’re just asking not to be priced out of helping our neighbors.”
