El Dorado County (Dec 27, 2024) – A tragic incident unfolded on Thursday evening in Amador County, resulting in the death of 31-year-old Tyler Quentin Balaskovits of Shingle Springs during an encounter with a California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer.

The sequence of events began when a CHP officer responded to a report of a vehicle obstructing Old Sacramento Road, east of Latrobe Road, around 5:15 p.m. Upon arrival, the officer observed Blakovitz attempting to push a pickup truck into the oncoming traffic lane.

While remaining in his patrol vehicle, the officer issued multiple commands for Blakovitz to cease his actions. Despite these directives, Balaskovits continued, prompting the officer to position his patrol car to block the truck’s path, resulting in a collision between the two vehicles.

Exiting his vehicle, the officer confronted Balaskovits, who was reportedly armed. An exchange of gunfire ensued, culminating in Blakovitz’s death at the scene. The officer was unharmed in the incident.

Authorities have confirmed that a firearm was recovered at the scene; however, specific details regarding the weapon have not been disclosed.

The California Highway Patrol, in collaboration with the Amador County District Attorney’s Office, is conducting a comprehensive investigation into the shooting.
