Organized by the Highway 50 Association, the wagon train commemorates the pioneer spirit that once traversed this route during the Gold Rush era. Participants will travel through various towns, including Fresh Pond and Pollock Pines, before culminating in Placerville, historically known as “Hangtown.” The event features nightly campfires, historical presentations, and community gatherings, providing an immersive experience into 19th-century pioneer life .

Registration is open to the public, with options for horse riders and wagon passengers. Fees vary based on membership status and participation duration. For instance, non-member horse riders can register for $120 for the full trip, while wagon passengers pay $250 .

In a recent video, local historian and YouTuber Eddie Eldorado highlighted the significance of the wagon train, stating, “This is their 76th year. It’s living history rolling down the highway.” Eldorado, known for his “Gold Rush Motherload” channel, often broadcasts from historic sites, including former Pony Express stations.

Eldorado also shed light on lesser-known historical events in the region, such as the presence of the Knights of the Golden Circle (KGC) in Volcano, California. During the Civil War, the KGC, a secret Confederate sympathizer group, attempted to disrupt Union gold shipments. In response, Union supporters smuggled a cannon named “Old Abe” into Volcano to deter potential uprisings .
