PLACERVILLE, Calif. — A local youth basketball program dedicated to mentoring at-risk youth will host a special community game celebrating its graduating players as the Gold Country Golden Eagles face off against the West Slope Wildcats in what organizers are calling more than just a game.

The matchup will serve as a Senior Night tribute, honoring the outgoing players who have spent years developing their skills and confidence through the program. For many of these athletes, it will mark the final time they take the court together in the Golden Eagles uniform.

“This one is more than just a game; it’s a moment in time,”

said Tracy M. Bunch, founder and CEO of Gold Country Basketball Inc.

“We’re celebrating our seniors and the journey they’ve shared together as teammates, friends, and members of this community.”

Gold Country Basketball Inc., a Placerville-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit, operates the Golden Eagles youth basketball program. Unlike traditional recreational leagues, the organization focuses on serving “at-promise” youth—young people who may be navigating the juvenile justice system, living in group homes, or facing other life challenges.

Through regular practices and mentorship, the program teaches basketball fundamentals such as drills, plays, and teamwork while building confidence in young athletes. The goal is to prepare participants not only to compete but also to pursue opportunities such as trying out for their school teams.

Under Bunch’s leadership since 2020, the program has developed partnerships with local agencies, including New Morning Youth & Family Services and the El Dorado County Probation Department, using basketball as a bridge between youth and the broader community.

The upcoming game is designed as a family-friendly event, featuring halftime entertainment and an opportunity for neighbors, fans, and local supporters to gather together.

“Bring the whole family out for a welcoming evening of basketball,”

Bunch said.

“It’s more than basketball — it’s community. We’re bringing people together one game at a time.”

Gold Country Basketball Inc. also hosts several community-focused events each year, including the “One Week, Big Impact” challenge, where the Golden Eagles youth team competes against members of the El Dorado County Probation Department in a friendly matchup intended to build positive relationships.

Community members interested in volunteering with the program can contact Bunch directly. Volunteers may assist with coaching drills, mentoring players, or helping organize special events. Because volunteers work closely with youth, background checks may be required.

Organizers encourage residents across El Dorado County to attend the upcoming senior night game and support the young athletes who have committed themselves to the program.
