SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — South Lake Tahoe Mayor Cody Bass was found guilty Thursday of misdemeanor harassment arising from a confrontation outside AleWorX in Stateline, Nevada, a verdict that now puts his previously stated pledge to resign squarely in the spotlight.

Bass was acquitted of a separate misdemeanor trespassing charge after a bench trial in Tahoe Justice Court before Judge Richard Glasson, according to reporting on the verdict. His sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 1. He faces a maximum sentence of six months in jail, a $1,000 fine or both.

The case began with an incident late Sept. 25, 2025, outside Lake Tahoe AleWorX, a business on the Nevada side of the state line. Bass, who was then serving as South Lake Tahoe mayor pro tem, became involved in a confrontation with a bouncer.

Douglas County sheriff’s deputies initially arrested Bass on suspicion of assault, trespassing and threats or harassment. Prosecutors later filed a criminal complaint charging him with misdemeanor trespassing and harassment; the assault allegation was dropped.

Bass previously pledged to resign if found at fault

The question of Bass‘ political future is now more consequential because of a statement he made publicly when the case was still pending.

During a January 2026 South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting, Bass defended his decision to remain in office while the criminal case proceeded.

“If I were to in any way be proven to be at fault in this situation, then I would immediately resign from my position as mayor.”

The statement was reported by the Tahoe Daily Tribune and other regional outlets.

At that time, Bass maintained his innocence and asked the council and residents to allow the legal process to run its course.

The council ultimately retained Bass as mayor in January in a 4-1 vote, with Councilmember Scott Robbins dissenting. Keith Roberts was selected as mayor pro tem.

Thursday’s guilty verdict changes the circumstances surrounding that earlier pledge.

What happened at AleWorX

The confrontation unfolded outside AleWorX in Stateline after Bass approached an employee who was working as a bouncer.

According to accounts presented in the case, Bass and the bouncer exchanged words before the encounter escalated. Surveillance video showed the two men interacting outside the establishment, although the video did not contain audio. The bouncer ultimately kicked Bass during the confrontation.

Bass called 911 after the incident and told authorities he had gone to the business to make amends with the bouncer. Investigators subsequently disputed that characterization after reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses.

The harassment charge centered on allegations that Bass threatened the bouncer and caused him to fear for his safety.

Bass has consistently disputed that account.

In an October 2025 statement to the community, he said he had been assaulted and maintained that he had done nothing wrong. He also said he had not entered AleWorX and denied trespassing or harassing anyone.

Defense plans appeal

Bass’ attorney, Adam Spicer, said after the verdict that he intends to appeal.

Spicer characterized the verdict as inconsistent with the evidence presented at trial and said he considered Judge Glasson fair.

Bass’ conviction is a misdemeanor conviction. The verdict itself does not automatically remove him from the South Lake Tahoe City Council.

When the case first emerged, South Lake Tahoe City Attorney Heather Stroud said state law provides that a council seat becomes vacant following a felony conviction or guilty plea. The charges against Bass were misdemeanors.

That legal distinction, however, does not answer the separate political question of whether Bass will honor his own commitment to resign if found at fault.

A turbulent period for South Lake Tahoe

The Bass case has unfolded during one of the most turbulent periods in recent South Lake Tahoe municipal politics.

Bass became mayor after former Mayor Tamara Wallace resigned in October 2025 following her public admission that she had taken money from Lake Tahoe Community Presbyterian Church, where she worked. Wallace subsequently urged Bass to resign because of his own legal troubles. Bass declined.

Bass has served on the South Lake Tahoe City Council since 2018. His current council term is scheduled to expire in November.

For residents across the Tahoe Basin — including those in El Dorado County who regularly cross the state line for work, recreation and commerce — the case carries significance beyond a single confrontation at a Stateline business.

South Lake Tahoe is an incorporated California city within El Dorado County, and its elected officials represent residents on issues ranging from public safety and tourism to regional transportation, housing and Lake Tahoe environmental policy.

The immediate issue now is straightforward: Bass has been convicted of the misdemeanor harassment charge and has said he would resign if he were found at fault.

His next scheduled appearance is Sept. 1 for sentencing.

Whether that appearance also marks the beginning of a transition in South Lake Tahoe’s City Hall remains to be seen.
