For a young actor from Shingle Springs, the road to Hollywood did not begin on a theater stage or in a childhood acting class.
For Gavin Alton-James Bailey, it began with a decision to leave behind construction work and pursue a career in the arts.
Bailey, who was born in Sacramento and grew up in Shingle Springs, began seriously pursuing acting at 18 after graduating from Union Mine High School. Before that transition, he spent nearly a year working in construction for Bonar Engineering.
The decision was unconventional.
Bailey has described questioning whether he wanted to spend the next several decades doing physical labor when his interests remained firmly rooted in creative work. Acting eventually emerged as the path he wanted to pursue.
In July 2024, he began formal training at Studio 24 in Folsom, focusing on on-camera acting, scene study and related performance techniques. According to his professional biography, he completed more than 200 hours of training in scene study, improvisation and voice work.
“I’ve always been interested in the fashion of actors or red carpet looks,” Bailey told Solving Sacramento. “What if I could do that?”
That initial interest in fashion ultimately became part of a broader creative pursuit.
Building a Film Resume
Bailey’s acting résumé remains in its early stages, but his credits show a steady progression.
He appeared in the 2025 independent thriller short “Double Trouble,” directed and written by Selene Renee Scott-Femenella. Bailey played Riley in the production. The film was associated with the J Street Film Festival in Sacramento.
His earlier screen work included a supporting, non-speaking role in “DREAM,” directed by Ben Pauling and Samuel Pauling. IMDb lists Bailey as an uncredited audience member in the film.
His most prominent listed screen role to date is in “Read the Room,” a 2026 short thriller directed and written by Destiny Miller.
Bailey plays Micah, with the film’s story centered on a telepathic bartender who uses her ability to understand customers until she hears something she cannot ignore. The film premiered at the J Street Film Festival on May 20, 2026.
In a June 2026 interview with Authority Magazine, Bailey described “Read the Room” as a project in which he plays the male lead and said production had wrapped as the film entered the festival circuit.
Discipline Beyond Acting
Acting is not Bailey’s only pursuit.
He is also an amateur kickboxer and has trained in Taekwondo, earning a black belt, according to Solving Sacramento. He has said the discipline required in combat sports complements his approach to acting.
That philosophy appears to be central to how he approaches his career.
Rather than relying solely on natural ability, Bailey emphasizes repetition, preparation and consistency.
“The greatest shortcut that I found is realizing that there are no shortcuts,” Bailey told Solving Sacramento. “The biggest shortcut is to get down and do the work.”
That approach also extends to his education outside acting.
Bailey completed a six-month Fashion Design Management certification program through eCornell in November 2025, adding fashion design and business knowledge to his developing résumé.
His professional website describes him as an “Actor & Fashion Creative” and identifies him as a SAG-eligible performer, fashion design management certified and an amateur kickboxer.
A Late Start Becomes a Strength
Bailey’s story is notable in part because he did not follow the traditional path into acting.
He has spoken openly about beginning at an age when many performers already have years of experience.
In a 2025 interview with Voyage LA, Bailey said that when he entered acting training, he was surrounded by people who already understood the craft and had years of experience. He responded by committing heavily to training and studying acting techniques and theory on his own.
He told Authority Magazine that one of the most difficult parts of beginning his career was feeling behind peers who had theater backgrounds or years of training. His strategy has been to concentrate on what he can control: preparation, training and daily progress.
That philosophy has become something of a personal operating principle.
Bailey carries a small medallion on his car keys engraved with the phrase, “When the wind fails, take to the oars.”
He explained to Authority Magazine that the phrase reflects his belief that people cannot control every circumstance surrounding their careers, but they can control their preparation, effort and persistence.
From a Rural El Dorado County Community to the Entertainment Industry
For residents of El Dorado County, Bailey’s story offers a familiar geographic contrast.
Shingle Springs is far removed from the traditional entertainment centers of Los Angeles and the Bay Area. Yet Bailey has begun building a professional network while training in the Sacramento region and pursuing film opportunities beyond the foothills.
Solving Sacramento described him as a Sacramento County-based actor while noting his roots in Shingle Springs and his experience growing up in a community where pursuing the arts could seem like an unlikely career choice.
Bailey has said that one of his long-term goals is to secure representation with an agency in the San Francisco or Los Angeles area and eventually land a role in a nationally or globally distributed production.
His professional ambitions now extend beyond simply booking another role.
He wants to establish himself as an actor, continue developing his fashion interests and use the experience of pursuing an unconventional career to encourage others who may not see the arts as a realistic option.
“I want to show people that are in a similar situation to me,” Bailey said, “or people who don’t think the arts or self expression is possible while being a career, and show them that it is possible.”

At 21, Bailey remains at the beginning of what could become a long career.
His current credits include independent film and festival work, while his training continues. IMDb currently lists “Read the Room” among his 2026 credits and “Double Trouble” among his 2025 work.

For an actor who began the journey only a few years ago, the trajectory is already taking him beyond the boundaries of his El Dorado County roots.
The next step, Bailey says, is simple: keep working.
