STATELINE, Nev. — A top food and beverage executive at Edgewood Tahoe was arrested Aug. 29 after a female employee reported that he sexually assaulted her inside his office, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office report cited by area news outlets.
Abraham Rubio, 60, was arrested by Douglas County sheriff’s deputies on probable cause of sexual assault after deputies responded to Edgewood at approximately 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 29. Rubio was identified as the executive director of the resort’s food and beverage department.
The case is drawing attention across the Lake Tahoe region, including El Dorado County, where residents regularly travel through the South Lake Tahoe-Stateline corridor for work, recreation, entertainment and tourism.
Employee reported alleged assault
According to the sheriff’s report, the employee told investigators that Rubio summoned her to his office that morning.
She alleged that Rubio told her she would have to do something for him in exchange for rehiring another employee. The woman then reported that Rubio pinned her against the office door, attempted to unbutton her shirt and tried to kiss her.
She also alleged that Rubio attempted to put his hand inside the front of her pants.
The employee told investigators she repeatedly said she did not want to participate and said “no” several times, according to the report summarized by South Tahoe Now.
The Record-Courier reported additional allegations from the sheriff’s report, including that Rubio allegedly undid his belt and forced the employee down before she was eventually able to get away from him.
The woman subsequently contacted another employee and reported the incident to Edgewood security and human resources.
Investigation led to arrest
Investigators interviewed both Rubio and the employee.
According to the sheriff’s report, the employee provided investigators with specific details about Rubio’s clothing and a marking on his inner thigh. Investigators said Rubio could not explain how she would have known those details.
Both Rubio and the employee reportedly told investigators they had never been intimate.
Following the investigation, deputies arrested Rubio and booked him into the Douglas County Jail.
Rubio was initially held on a $100,003 bond. After appearing in Tahoe Justice Court on Sept. 1, he was released after posting $20,000 cash bail.
He is scheduled to return to court next week, according to the Record-Courier.
Edgewood executive had been active in resort operations
Rubio had publicly represented Edgewood Tahoe in community activities shortly before his arrest.
On Aug. 3, he participated with other Edgewood officials in a Bread & Broth community meal program in South Lake Tahoe. The organization identified him at the time as Edgewood’s food and beverage manager.
Edgewood Tahoe’s resort complex sits along the Lake Tahoe shoreline in Stateline, Nevada, immediately adjacent to the California-Nevada border and within the regular travel sphere of South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County residents. The resort lists its Stateline address as 180 Lake Parkway.
Allegation, not conviction
Rubio has been accused of sexual assault but has not been convicted of a crime.
An arrest based on probable cause represents the law enforcement determination that sufficient grounds existed to take the suspect into custody. The allegations remain subject to the criminal court process, where prosecutors must prove any charge beyond a reasonable doubt.
The investigation and subsequent court proceedings will determine what charges, if any, ultimately move forward.
