Fire, Death Reported on Bonetti Road Near Pollock Pines
POLLOCK PINES, Calif. — A fire and a deceased person were discovered Thursday morning along Bonetti Road in a remote area southeast of Pollock Pines, prompting an investigation by authorities.
Employees of a private timber company working in the area noticed smoke at approximately 7:06 a.m. and went to investigate, according to information provided to INEDC.
Workers reported finding a fire and a deceased person just beyond the four-mile marker on Bonetti Road, which is accessed from Mormon Emigrant Trail in the forested area near Pollock Pines.
The discovery occurred in an area of El Dorado County that includes forest roads and timberland southeast of Pollock Pines. Public records identify Bonetti Road as a route extending from Mormon Emigrant Trail into the surrounding Eldorado National Forest area. A Sacramento Municipal Utility District technical report identifies Bonetti Road as a 4.5-mile route beginning at Mormon Emigrant Trail.
The road and surrounding area also have a history of wildfire-recovery work. A Sierra Nevada Conservancy project document identifies Bonetti Road as a priority area for hazardous roadside vegetation treatment following the 2021 Caldor Fire, with work focused on forestland southeast of Pollock Pines.
Cause and circumstances remain unknown
At this stage, there is no verified information establishing how the person died, what caused the fire or whether the death and fire are related.
No cause of death has been released, and authorities have not publicly identified the deceased person.
Because the incident remains under investigation, additional details — including the identity of the deceased, the origin of the fire and whether criminal activity is suspected — should not be inferred until investigators release verified information.
“The circumstances surrounding the death and fire remain under investigation.”
That statement reflects the current status of the incident; no additional official quotation was available at publication time, so INEDC is not attributing an unverified statement to a specific agency or official.
Remote location presents investigative challenges
Bonetti Road runs through a largely rural and forested portion of El Dorado County, where access and communications can be more difficult than in populated areas.
The road’s connection to Mormon Emigrant Trail places the incident within the broader forest corridor southeast of Pollock Pines and toward the Eldorado National Forest. Historical and government records confirm the road’s location and its use within the forest transportation network.
Investigators will be responsible for determining whether the fire was accidental, intentional or associated with the circumstances surrounding the death.
INEDC will update this report as verified information becomes available from law enforcement, fire officials or the El Dorado County Coroner’s Office.
Editor’s note: This initial report is based on preliminary information concerning the discovery. Details may change as investigators establish the facts.
