SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — Artificial intelligence has moved rapidly from a futuristic concept to an everyday tool, and Lake Tahoe Unified School District is asking the South Lake Tahoe community how that technology should be used in local classrooms.

LTUSD will host a Community Conversation on Artificial Intelligence in schools from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, at the district office, 1021 Al Tahoe Blvd. The event is open to families, students, district staff and community members.

The discussion comes as schools across California and the nation grapple with questions surrounding generative AI, including its potential educational benefits, academic integrity, student learning and the skills students will need in a changing workforce.

District seeks community perspective

Rather than presenting AI solely as a technology issue, LTUSD says it wants community members to help frame the discussion about what artificial intelligence means for students and schools — both now and in the future.

One of the evening’s central questions will be: “Do you have concerns about student learning because of the use of AI?”

The program also will include a presentation by Student Board Member Miri Lucksinger, providing a student perspective on the rapidly evolving technology.

Participants then will break into small-table conversations to discuss what LTUSD should consider as artificial intelligence becomes more prevalent in education.

Questions will include what opportunities AI may create, what concerns it raises and what residents would like the district to do as the technology continues to evolve.

AI already part of district discussion

The upcoming conversation is not LTUSD’s first effort to engage the community in discussions about emerging educational issues.

The district has used its Community Conversations and State of the District events to solicit feedback from parents, students, educators and community partners. LTUSD says input from those discussions is considered as the district updates its Local Control Accountability Plan, or LCAP.

Artificial intelligence also has already entered LTUSD’s professional-development discussions. District materials indicate that its 2025-26 staff development day included training focused in part on artificial intelligence along with the science of reading and culturally responsive instruction.

That makes the Oct. 6 meeting potentially significant for parents and educators who want to understand how AI training for teachers could translate into classroom practices.

Preparing students for a changing world

LTUSD’s 2026-27 Board of Education priorities include preparing students for life after graduation through academic, social-emotional and future-ready skills, with an emphasis on critical thinking, creativity, communication, independence and real-world learning.

The AI conversation fits directly into that broader question: How can schools prepare students for a world in which artificial intelligence is increasingly part of education, employment and everyday communication while preserving the human skills at the center of learning?

LTUSD’s invitation emphasizes that community members do not need to have all the answers.

“We hope you’ll join us, share your perspective, and help us continue the conversation about AI and the future of teaching and learning in LTUSD,” the district stated in its announcement.

For South Lake Tahoe families, the meeting offers an opportunity to move the discussion beyond the technology itself and toward a more fundamental question: What should artificial intelligence look like in a local public-school classroom?

The Community Conversation is scheduled for 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, at the LTUSD District Office, 1021 Al Tahoe Blvd., South Lake Tahoe.

For additional district information, residents can consult Lake Tahoe Unified School District and its Board of Education information, which outlines the district’s current priorities.
