Art and Artillery: Remembering Kevin Kohler Through His Paintings
EL DORADO HILLS, Calif. — The relationship between military service and artistic expression will take center stage in El Dorado Hills this month as the Veteran Art Institute presents an exhibition honoring Marine veteran Kevin Kohler and his artistic legacy.
Titled “Honoring the Art & Legacy of Kevin Kohler,” the exhibition opens Saturday, Oct. 17, and will remain on view through Nov. 30. The public is invited to attend the opening reception from 3 to 6 p.m. at NorCal Spine & Sport, 903 Embarcadero Drive, Suite 4, in El Dorado Hills.
The exhibition offers residents of El Dorado County an opportunity to encounter Kohler’s artwork and consider the lasting contributions of veterans beyond their years in uniform.
The institute describes the exhibition as an opportunity to “Celebrate the art and legacy of Marine veteran Kevin Kohler.”
More Than a Military Story
The phrase Art and Artillery captures a compelling contrast: military service is associated with discipline, duty and the machinery of conflict, while art offers a means of personal expression, interpretation and communication.
Kohler’s exhibition brings those worlds together through the work of a Marine veteran whose paintings now provide the focus of a community remembrance.
The available exhibition announcement, however, provides limited biographical information about Kohler. It does not detail his military assignments, the circumstances that shaped his artistic career or the personal stories behind individual paintings. Those details should be established through family members, fellow Marines, the artist’s records or the exhibition’s organizers before being included in a fuller account of his life.
What is confirmed is that the Veteran Art Institute has dedicated a public exhibition to preserving and presenting his artistic legacy.
A Painting Called “Red Door”
One painting has already been identified in the institute’s exhibition materials: “Red Door,” which appears on the event poster.
The institute also provides an illustrated price list dated September 2026, featuring images of the artwork, titles, dimensions and prices. The document offers visitors a way to preview the collection and learn more about the works included in the exhibition.
The painting’s title invites curiosity, but its meaning should be left to the artwork itself and any documented explanation provided by Kohler or those who knew him. Without that context, assigning a specific symbolism to the image would risk telling a story the artist never intended.
That distinction matters in a memorial exhibition. Appreciating the work is one thing; understanding the artist behind it requires listening to the people who knew him and learning the history behind each piece.
The Veteran Art Institute’s Mission
The exhibition is presented by the Veteran Art Institute, a nonprofit organization that describes its mission as empowering service members and veterans through creativity. Its broader programming showcases veteran artists and creates opportunities for audiences to engage with their work and experiences.
For El Dorado County, the exhibition also brings veteran-centered arts programming into a familiar local setting. Residents can attend without traveling outside the county, view the paintings and take part in a public event dedicated to Kohler’s legacy.
Art can preserve experiences in ways that conventional biographies cannot always capture. A painting may invite questions about memory, identity, place and the experiences that influence a person’s view of the world. The viewer’s interpretation is part of that encounter, even when the artist’s own explanation is unavailable.

Preserving an Artistic Legacy
A meaningful account of Kevin Kohler’s life should ultimately go beyond the dates and location of an exhibition. It should explore what he created, what military service meant to him, how he developed as an artist and what his work meant to the people closest to him.
Those questions provide an opportunity for a deeper local feature — one built around the paintings, supported by firsthand accounts and grounded in verifiable details.
For now, the upcoming exhibition gives El Dorado Hills residents a place to begin that exploration. The paintings are the centerpiece, and the tribute offers a public opportunity to recognize a Marine veteran through his creative work.
Art and artillery may represent different expressions of human experience, but Kohler’s exhibition brings the two into the same conversation — one that begins with looking at the art and continues with learning about the man who made it.
