EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. — Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2026

A Red Flag Warning will put El Dorado County and surrounding Sierra Nevada communities on heightened wildfire alert beginning early Thursday, as strong winds and exceptionally low humidity combine with dry vegetation to create dangerous fire conditions.

The National Weather Service Sacramento office issued the warning for portions of the Sierra Nevada and adjacent foothills, including the El Dorado-Amador region. The warning is scheduled to remain in effect from midnight Thursday through 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 16, according to the agency’s official fire weather bulletin.

For residents across El Dorado County — from the western foothills around Placerville to mountain communities farther east — the warning is a reminder that a small ignition can quickly become a dangerous wildfire when wind and dry air align.

Strong winds, low humidity increase fire danger

The National Weather Service forecast calls for northeast to east winds of 15 to 25 mph, with gusts reaching 25 to 45 mph. Daytime relative humidity is expected to fall to 10% to 25%, with single-digit humidity possible and limited overnight recovery.

The agency’s warning is direct: “Any fires that develop will spread rapidly.”

These conditions can make it harder for firefighters to contain a new ignition. Wind can carry embers beyond a fire’s perimeter, potentially starting additional fires ahead of the main blaze. Low humidity and dry vegetation can further support rapid fire growth.

The warning does not mean a wildfire has started or that an evacuation has been ordered. It means conditions are expected to be favorable for dangerous fire behavior if an ignition occurs.

What El Dorado County residents should do now

Residents should use the time before the warning takes effect to prepare their households and review evacuation plans. CAL FIRE recommends preparing an emergency supply kit, creating a family wildfire action plan and being ready to evacuate when directed.

Key precautions include:

  • Avoid activities that could spark a fire. Follow applicable restrictions and avoid outdoor burning during critical fire weather.

  • Prepare an emergency go-bag. Include medications, identification, important documents, drinking water, essential supplies and items needed by children or pets.

  • Identify at least two evacuation routes. Consider how quickly you could leave if a fire blocks your usual road.

  • Keep phones charged. Ensure family members know how to receive emergency notifications.

  • Follow evacuation instructions immediately. Do not wait for visible flames or smoke if authorities order you to leave.

Residents can review CAL FIRE’s official preparation guidance at Ready for Wildfire.

Where to get evacuation alerts in El Dorado County

El Dorado County residents can sign up for emergency notifications through the Sheriff’s Office of Emergency Services at ready.eldoradosheriff.gov. The county’s alert system can deliver notifications through available channels, including phone calls, text messages, email and its emergency alerting app.

The county also provides access to its Perimeter evacuation map, which allows residents to identify evacuation zones, routes, road closures and shelter locations. The county emphasizes that Perimeter is a mapping resource, not an emergency alert system; residents should use the official alert service for evacuation notifications.

For statewide emergency information, CAL FIRE directs residents to AwareCA, while its Ready for Wildfire website offers evacuation planning and preparedness resources.

Fire weather warning extends beyond El Dorado County

CAL FIRE’s broader statewide notice also identifies critical fire weather concerns in portions of Lake County and in Los Angeles, Kern and Ventura counties. A separate Fire Weather Watch covers the mountains of San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties for Friday, while portions of Lake County are expected to transition from a Red Flag Warning to a Fire Weather Watch.

For El Dorado County residents, however, the immediate priority is the Sierra Nevada warning and the possibility that a wind-driven fire could threaten nearby neighborhoods, rural properties and evacuation routes.

The bottom line: Prepare before Thursday’s warning begins. Keep emergency supplies accessible, know where you would go and how you would get there, and monitor official notifications for changes in conditions or evacuation instructions.

Reporting note: The warning times and weather details above reflect the National Weather Service bulletin available Wednesday, Oct. 14. Residents should check official updates for any changes.
