El Dorado County (March 23, 2024) – In a tragic turn of events, a mountain lion attack in El Dorado County resulted in the death of one young man and left his brother injured, marking what authorities believe to be the first fatal incident of its kind in California in two decades.

The grim episode unfolded on Saturday, as the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office received a distressing 911 call at 1:13 p.m. alerting them to an attack by a mountain lion on two individuals. The victims, identified as a 21-year-old man who succumbed to his injuries and his 18-year-old brother, were engaged in the innocuous activity of searching for deer antler sheds in the remote terrain.

Situated approximately five miles southeast of Georgetown, the incident occurred on Darling Ridge Road near Skid Road, nestled within the confines of Eldorado National Forest.

Dispatch audio transcripts shed light on the harrowing moments following the attack. The younger brother sustained facial injuries and managed to seek refuge behind a gate, providing critical information to emergency responders. Meanwhile, the mountain lion had pinned down the older brother, grasping his neck with lethal force.

Deputies, armed and on high alert, swiftly located the victims. Tragically, they found the mountain lion crouched beside the fatally wounded 21-year-old, prompting them to discharge their weapons to deter the aggressive predator. Despite their efforts, the victim could not be saved.

Efforts to locate and address the mountain lion responsible for the attack are underway, with personnel from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife collaborating with trappers in the endeavor.

While mountain lion attacks on humans are rare, they evoke profound concern due to their potential for fatal consequences.

California’s mountain lion population has been afforded legal protection since the passage of Proposition 117 in 1990, reflecting a commitment to conservation efforts while acknowledging the significance of preserving these apex predators’ natural habitats.

The rarity of fatal mountain lion attacks underscores the gravity of this tragedy, resonating within a state where such incidents are infrequent but deeply impactful. As authorities continue their investigation, the community mourns the loss of a young life and hopes for the swift recovery of the injured survivor, grappling with the sobering reality of nature’s unpredictable power.
