The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office reported receiving a call at approximately 4:08 p.m. regarding an overdue skier. The individual’s vehicle was discovered parked along State Route 89 near Luther Pass. Friends of the missing skier located the body in an avalanche-prone area; however, hazardous snow conditions necessitated postponing the recovery operation until the following day.

On Tuesday, February 18, at 6:00 a.m., a coordinated effort involving the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue team, the Sierra Avalanche Center, the U.S. Forest Service – Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, Caltrans District 3, and the California Highway Patrol – South Lake Tahoe commenced the recovery mission. Due to unstable snow conditions, controlled explosives were utilized to mitigate further avalanche risks. By approximately 5:00 p.m., the decedent was safely extracted from the backcountry with the assistance of EDSO SAR volunteers and the ECHO-1 helicopter.

This incident underscores the critical importance of avalanche forecasting services. The Sierra Avalanche Center, which provides daily avalanche forecasts for the region, is currently facing potential federal budget cuts that may reduce its operational capacity. Such reductions could significantly impact the safety of backcountry enthusiasts who rely on timely and accurate avalanche information.

The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office urges all individuals engaging in outdoor recreational activities to exercise caution and remain informed about current conditions. Staying updated with the latest avalanche forecasts and understanding the inherent risks associated with backcountry travel are essential steps in ensuring personal safety.

This marks the first avalanche-related fatality in California for the 2024–2025 season and the ninth in the United States.
