#BonanzaIncident update (Wednesday, 7 am): The fire remains at 181 acres and is 15% contained. Throughout the day, crews will be monitoring for hot spots and continuing to strengthen control lines and mopping up. Please watch for fire personnel and equipment working in the area.

SHINGLE SPRINGS, Calif. — A fast-moving wildfire dubbed the Bonanza Fire erupted Tuesday afternoon near Bonanza Auto Road, quickly scorching more than 60 acres and prompting mandatory evacuations for residents southeast of Shingle Springs, El Dorado County authorities confirmed.

The blaze ignited around 2:31 p.m. on private land near Bonanza Auto Dismantlers, a well-known salvage yard off Old French Town Road, and spread eastward with moderate speed, consuming several vehicles on site and threatening nearby homes. By late afternoon, Cal Fire officials reported the fire at approximately 63 acres with forward progress slowed but not yet fully contained.

Mandatory evacuation orders were issued for Chablis Drive and Lumbo Road, while evacuation warnings extended to surrounding areas bordered by Highway 49 (east), Crystal Boulevard (south), Gold Country Drive (north), and China Hill Road (northwest). Authorities emphasized the risk of rapid changes in fire behavior due to vegetation and wind conditions.

“We are urging residents to leave immediately when ordered—this fire is moving and the terrain complicates suppression efforts,” said Capt. Chris Vestal, public information officer for Cal Fire’s Amador-El Dorado Unit.

The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office coordinated with Cal Fire and local fire districts to assist in door-to-door notifications. A temporary evacuation shelter was quickly established at the El Dorado County Library in Placerville (330 Fair Lane). Pets are permitted if crated or leashed, according to emergency services.

At least eight vehicles were destroyed at Bonanza Auto Dismantlers, with flames leaping over metal piles and generating thick plumes visible as far as Cameron Park. No injuries have been reported as of this writing, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Multiple ground crews, supported by air tankers and helicopters, continued to battle hot spots and secure containment lines into the evening. Firefighters warned that shifting winds could prolong firefighting efforts overnight and into Wednesday.

Residents are advised to:

  • Stay alert through El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office alerts and Cal Fire updates.

  • Avoid the area to allow emergency responders full access.

  • Prepare for possible extended evacuations if containment is delayed.
