For generations of travelers along U.S. Highway 50, the weathered Whitehall Building has stood as a reminder of El Dorado County’s rich transportation history. Today, however, one of the county’s most recognizable roadside landmarks is entering a new chapter as crews work to remove portions of the severely deteriorated structure while preserving what can still be saved.<\/p>\n
Located east of Pollock Pines along the South Fork of the American River, the historic building has suffered decades of neglect after sitting vacant. Years of exposure to the elements ultimately caused the western section of the structure to partially collapse, leaving the remaining building leaning dangerously near the highway shoulder.<\/p>\n
Rather than ordering the complete demolition of the landmark, El Dorado County and the property owner have agreed on a compromise designed to protect both public safety and local history.<\/p>\n
Under an approved demolition permit and Code Enforcement Compliance Agreement, contractors are removing the collapsed western portion of the building while stabilizing the surviving eastern section. The remaining structure will be enclosed and weather-tightened to prevent further deterioration while future preservation options are evaluated.<\/p>\n
County officials have authorized up to $100,000 from the El Dorado County Code Enforcement Abatement Fund to complete the emergency stabilization work.<\/p>\n

A Landmark Along California’s Historic Highway<\/h2>\n
Long before Interstate travel, the Whitehall property welcomed stagecoach passengers, motorists and local residents traveling what was then known as the Great Turnpike.<\/p>\n
In the early 1910s, the property was owned by Albert B. “Bert” Randall and operated as Randall’s, a popular roadside roadhouse that proudly advertised serving “the best-kegged beer on the great turnpike.”<\/p>\n
Its location became even more significant in 1913 when the route was incorporated into the famed Lincoln Highway, America’s first transcontinental automobile highway.<\/p>\n
Randall also served as the area’s postmaster, operating the White Hall Post Office directly from the building. The first floor featured a welcoming club room where travelers gathered, while the upstairs provided overnight lodging for guests making the long journey through the Sierra Nevada.<\/p>\n
The Resort Years<\/h2>\n
The building entered a new era in 1935 when Virgil and Mrs. Jones completed an extensive renovation that transformed the aging roadhouse into a modern resort destination.<\/p>\n

As traffic patterns changed and the business closed, the once-bustling resort gradually fell into disrepair.<\/p>\n
Vacant for many years, the building became increasingly unstable. Weather, time and deferred maintenance eventually caused catastrophic structural failure, with the western end collapsing under its own weight.<\/p>\n
County officials fenced the property, boarded windows and doors, and initiated code enforcement proceedings after determining the deteriorating building posed a safety risk.<\/p>\n
Because of its location immediately adjacent to Highway 50, concerns centered on protecting motorists while preventing additional structural collapse.<\/p>\n
Is Whitehall Coming or Going?<\/h2>\n
The answer is both.<\/p>\n
While the collapsed western portion is being demolished, the remaining eastern section is being preserved through emergency stabilization measures rather than complete removal.<\/p>\n
Historic preservation advocates often view stabilization as an important first step that can keep future restoration possibilities alive, although no long-term redevelopment plans have been publicly announced.<\/p>\n
