This is the story of how the mountains themselves became my first teacher.<\/p>\n

Every life has a geography that shapes it. For some, it is a city street. For others, it is a family business, a church or a school. For me, it was the Sierra Nevada.<\/p>\n

Long before I understood philosophy, politics or religion, the mountains were already teaching me right from wrong.<\/p>\n

I didn’t learn ethics from a textbook. I learned them stacking firewood beside my father. I learned them standing forty feet above the ground in a homemade treehouse that swayed with every gust of wind. I learned them while fishing cold Sierra streams, walking through Washoe Meadows, watching cattle graze behind weathered fences and sitting inside a Native American teepee built by a craftsman who never knew he was teaching a young boy one of life’s greatest lessons.<\/p>\n

Growing up in South Lake Tahoe during the 1960s and early 1970s meant living in a place that was still close to the frontier. Harvey’s Wagon Wheel and Harveys Resort Hotel brought visitors from around the world, while just beyond the casinos lay forests, meadows and mountains where survival still depended upon neighbors helping neighbors.<\/p>\n

The rules were rarely written.<\/p>\n

You respected another man’s property.<\/p>\n

You cut only the wood you needed.<\/p>\n

You left a campsite cleaner than you found it.<\/p>\n

You kept your word because someday your life might depend upon someone believing it.<\/p>\n

These weren’t political values. They weren’t religious doctrines. They were mountain ethics.<\/p>\n

Like many boys of my generation, I spent Sunday evenings watching Bonanza<\/em>. To me, the Cartwright family wasn’t simply entertainment. Their code of honesty, responsibility and quiet strength reflected much of what I saw around me in the Sierra. Later, I would discover that real life was more complicated than television, but the principles remained remarkably similar.<\/p>\n

As my family eventually left Tahoe for Pleasant Valley and Gold Oak School in El Dorado County, those lessons were tested. I became the new kid. I experienced failure, disappointment and change. Over time I watched El Dorado County transform from a collection of small foothill communities into one of California’s fastest-growing regions. Eventually I found myself no longer the newcomer, but one of the people with memories reaching back to an earlier county that many newer residents never knew.<\/p>\n

Looking back, I realized these stories were connected by something larger than nostalgia.<\/p>\n
