Now, that service is receiving one of the U.S. military\u2019s most recognizable honors.<\/p>\n
Joshua Castro, a Placerville resident who served in the U.S. Army during Operation Iraqi Freedom, is scheduled to receive a Purple Heart for wounds sustained during a combat operation near Ramadi, Iraq.<\/p>\n
The Purple Heart is awarded to members of the U.S. armed forces who are wounded or killed as a result of enemy action. For Castro, the medal traces back to March 4, 2007, when he was conducting a combat patrol with Iraqi police and Iraqi Army personnel.<\/p>\n
The patrol was traveling along an elevated canal road near Ramadi when the vehicle carrying Castro was struck by an improvised explosive device.<\/p>\n
The blast knocked him down and, for a period, knocked him unconscious.<\/p>\n
When Castro regained consciousness, the sounds around him had changed.<\/p>\n
