{"id":13878,"date":"2026-08-26T20:22:24","date_gmt":"2026-08-27T04:22:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inedc.com\/26\/?p=13878"},"modified":"2026-08-26T20:22:24","modified_gmt":"2026-08-27T04:22:24","slug":"el-dorado-county-grand-jury-seeks-citizen-watchdogs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/inedc.com\/26\/government\/el-dorado-county-grand-jury-seeks-citizen-watchdogs\/","title":{"rendered":"El Dorado County Grand Jury Seeks Citizen Watchdogs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">PLACERVILLE \u2014 Government oversight in El Dorado County does not rest entirely with elected officials, auditors or state regulators.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Each year, 19 local residents are selected to serve on the <strong>El Dorado County Civil Grand Jury<\/strong>, an independent citizen panel that examines the operations of county government and other public agencies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The Civil Grand Jury can investigate county and city governments, special districts and public schools. Its work can result in public reports containing findings and recommendations intended to make government operations more effective and accountable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The Superior Court describes serving on the Civil Grand Jury as an opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the community. No special professional background or training is required.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">That makes the jury one of the county&#8217;s more direct avenues for residents to examine how their local government operates.<\/p>\n<h3>A Year Inside Local Government<\/h3>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Civil Grand Juries are not permanent panels. Each jury is independently impaneled for a single year, running from July 1 through June 30. The following year&#8217;s jury is a separate body and does not simply inherit the previous jury&#8217;s investigations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">During its term, a jury may investigate issues involving government agencies and operations. It also may examine complaints submitted by members of the public.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The scope can be broad.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Past El Dorado County Civil Grand Jury investigations have examined subjects ranging from county facilities and airports to code compliance, special districts and the county&#8217;s response to previous grand jury recommendations. The 2025-26 jury, for example, issued reports examining county-owned airports, code compliance, correctional facilities and the county&#8217;s response to earlier recommendations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The jury&#8217;s reports can require formal responses from public agencies and officials. Under California law, response deadlines generally are 60 or 90 days, depending on the public entity or official involved.<\/p>\n<h3>Who Can Serve?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The Superior Court lists several basic qualifications for prospective grand jurors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Applicants must be U.S. citizens, at least 18 years old and have lived in El Dorado County for at least one year before selection. They also must possess ordinary intelligence, sound judgment and fair character, and have sufficient knowledge of English. Certain public officials, people recently discharged from grand jury service and individuals with specified criminal convictions are ineligible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The job is also a significant time commitment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The county says grand jurors should expect to devote approximately 10 to 20 hours per week to their duties. At least four general meetings are held each month in Placerville, in addition to time required for research, interviews, meetings and report writing. Two days of training are also required near the beginning of the term.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The Civil Grand Jury meets at <strong>360 Fair Lane, Building B, in Placerville<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Recruitment Information Updated<\/h3>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">An earlier community announcement stated that recruitment for the El Dorado County Civil Grand Jury begins in March and continues through mid-May, with applications available through the county&#8217;s Grand Jury website.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">That information corresponds to a previous recruitment cycle. The Superior Court&#8217;s current website states that applications for the <strong>July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2027, term are now closed<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Residents interested in serving in a future term should monitor the county&#8217;s official Civil Grand Jury application page for the next recruitment period.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eldoradocounty.ca.gov\/Public-Safety-Justice\/Safety-Justice\/Grand-Jury\/Apply-To-Join?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">El Dorado County Civil Grand Jury \u2014 Apply to Join<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>More Than a Title<\/h3>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Serving on the Civil Grand Jury is not simply a matter of attending meetings and reviewing paperwork.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Grand jurors conduct interviews, research government operations and evaluate information gathered during investigations.
