It is also where generations of families have built homes, businesses and communities.

That relationship between people and place takes center stage this week as Arts and Culture El Dorado presents “Working Lands, Working People,” a new exhibition at Switchboard Gallery in downtown Placerville.

The exhibition opens with a public reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, at the gallery, 525 Main St.

According to Arts and Culture El Dorado, the exhibition explores the intersections of “land, labor, and life” across El Dorado County and the Sierra Nevada foothills. Its focus ranges from natural landscapes and watersheds to agriculture, rural employment and the county’s many trades and crafts.

The premise is straightforward but significant: The land is not simply a backdrop for the people who live here.

It is part of the story.

Beyond the postcard

El Dorado County is often celebrated for its scenic foothills, vineyards, orchards, forests and historic communities. But the landscape also represents something more practical — a place where people make a living.

“Working Lands, Working People” aims to look at that less polished side of the regional landscape.

The exhibition traces the county’s agricultural and timber heritage while examining the realities of rural work and the economic pressures that accompany life in a changing foothill community.

Arts and Culture El Dorado describes the exhibition as an opportunity to highlight the “daily grit of rural jobs” while considering the sometimes difficult balance between community culture, economic survival and the land itself.

That makes the exhibition particularly relevant in a county where agriculture, natural resources, small businesses, skilled trades and rural livelihoods remain closely tied to the physical environment.

Art as a record of working life

The exhibition brings together creative perspectives on what it means to work — and what it means to work on, with or because of the land.

That can include the obvious imagery of farms, forests and foothill landscapes. But the broader concept reaches into the people and occupations that keep rural communities functioning.

In that sense, the exhibition is less about presenting an idealized version of country life and more about asking what the word work means when the environment itself is part of the equation.

The exhibition statement says the participating artists will offer “diverse voices and creative expressions” addressing the connection between work and the land residents call home.

For El Dorado County residents, that connection is familiar territory.

The county’s landscape influences where people live, what they grow, what they build and how they earn a living. Water, forests, soil, weather and geography all impose practical realities that cannot be separated from daily life.

A downtown Placerville gathering place

The exhibition will be presented at Switchboard Gallery, operated by Arts and Culture El Dorado at 525 Main St. in Placerville.

The gallery and Arts and Culture El Dorado’s administrative offices occupy the historic building, whose original purpose was as a Pacific Telephone Company facility.

Regular gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, according to Arts and Culture El Dorado.

For an organization serving a largely rural county, the gallery provides a downtown venue where residents can encounter art that reflects their own communities and surroundings. The California Arts Council has identified Arts and Culture El Dorado as the principal organization providing arts services and access to arts experiences in rural El Dorado County.

“Working Lands, Working People” fits squarely within that mission.

It asks viewers to consider a familiar landscape from a different angle — not simply as something beautiful, historic or scenic, but as something people depend upon every day.

And in El Dorado County, that may be the most important part of the picture.

The opening reception for “Working Lands, Working People” is Thursday, Sept. 3, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Switchboard Gallery, 525 Main St., Placerville.

Source: Arts and Culture El Dorado — “Working Lands, Working People” and Switchboard Gallery

What does work mean when your workplace is the land itself?
