PLACERVILLE, Calif. \u2014<\/strong> After decades of planning, engineering and construction, the wait is finally nearing its end.<\/p>\n

El Dorado County has announced that a celebration marking completion of the new Mosquito Road Bridge<\/strong> is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 25, 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

For residents who have spent years navigating the narrow, winding approach to the existing bridge, the date represents more than a ceremonial ribbon-cutting. It marks a major change in how the remote communities of Mosquito and Swansboro<\/strong> connect with Placerville and the rest of El Dorado County.<\/p>\n

The replacement project has been years in the making. County records show the Board of Supervisors authorized construction plans in December 2021, with an estimated construction-phase cost of $70.5 million at that time. The project ultimately advanced as a roughly $93 million construction undertaking, with Shimmick Construction awarded the construction contract in 2022.<\/p>\n

County officials have described the new crossing as a critical transportation and emergency-access improvement.<\/p>\n

From a 1939 Bridge to a Modern Crossing<\/h3>\n

The existing Mosquito Road Bridge dates to 1939<\/strong>. It is a narrow, single-lane structure that has long represented both the history and the transportation limitations of this rugged portion of El Dorado County.<\/p>\n

The replacement is a substantial engineering project.<\/p>\n

The new bridge is a three-span cast-in-place concrete segmental structure<\/strong> crossing the South Fork of the American River. Project information describes a main span of approximately 536 feet, with the completed structure extending roughly 1,180 feet and rising hundreds of feet above the canyon floor.<\/p>\n

Rather than forcing drivers to negotiate the historic bridge and its difficult approach, the new alignment provides a modern two-lane roadway designed for substantially improved capacity and reliability.<\/p>\n

For residents of Mosquito and Swansboro, the practical difference is the most important part.<\/p>\n

A Safety and Emergency-Access Upgrade<\/h3>\n

The Mosquito Road corridor is not simply another rural road in El Dorado County.<\/p>\n

Its location and terrain make reliable access especially important during emergencies, including wildfire evacuations.<\/p>\n

County officials have previously emphasized the bridge’s importance as a connection for emergency vehicles and evacuation routes. The replacement will eliminate the limitations associated with the aging one-lane bridge and provide a modern crossing designed for contemporary traffic and emergency-response needs.<\/p>\n

That importance became particularly clear during the 2022 Mosquito Fire<\/strong>, when access through the canyon was part of the larger emergency picture for communities in the area.<\/p>\n

The new bridge is therefore infrastructure with a purpose extending well beyond everyday commuting.<\/p>\n

The Old Bridge Will Not Disappear<\/h3>\n

While the new bridge represents the future, El Dorado County is not simply abandoning the past.<\/p>\n

The historic 1939 bridge is planned for preservation and conversion to pedestrian and bicycle use<\/strong> once vehicle traffic moves to the new structure. Project information indicates the historic crossing will remain as a physical connection to the area’s past while no longer carrying regular vehicle traffic.<\/p>\n

That creates an unusual combination: a major modern transportation facility alongside a preserved piece of El Dorado County history.<\/p>\n

For hikers, bicyclists and residents interested in the county’s transportation heritage, the old bridge will offer a very different experience once the new crossing assumes the traffic load.<\/p>\n

A Project Funded Primarily Through Federal Dollars<\/h3>\n

The financial history is also significant.<\/p>\n

County records have consistently identified the federal Highway Bridge Program<\/strong> as the principal funding source. In 2021, the project was listed as 99.9% Highway Bridge Program funding and 0.1% Sacramento Municipal Utility District funding.<\/p>\n

More recent county budget documents put the overall project figure higher than the commonly cited $93 million construction-contract amount, illustrating why the construction contract and total project cost should not be treated as interchangeable figures. The county’s 2025-26 recommended budget described the Mosquito Bridge project as a $102 million project<\/strong>, funded primarily through Highway Bridge Program funds.<\/p>\n

That distinction matters when taxpayers and residents evaluate the final price of major public infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Years of Work Behind One Friday Morning<\/h3>\n

The county awarded the construction contract to Shimmick Construction Company Inc.<\/strong> in May 2022, and construction activity began later that year.<\/p>\n

The work has required construction in steep, difficult terrain, including major concrete foundations, towering bridge piers, retaining structures, roadway realignment, drainage improvements and the construction of the bridge itself.<\/p>\n

The county has also had to schedule lengthy road closures around major construction phases. In 2026, Mosquito Road was scheduled for a full closure from May 30 through Aug. 7 to accommodate construction, drainage, materials deliveries, bridge work and related improvements. The county established a detour through Rock Creek Road during the closure.<\/p>\n

For people living along the corridor, the inconvenience has been tangible.<\/p>\n

The payoff is supposed to be permanent.<\/p>\n

Sept. 25 Marks the Milestone<\/h3>\n

If construction remains on schedule, that payoff will be celebrated Friday morning, Sept. 25.<\/p>\n

The county has invited the community to save the date<\/strong>, with additional details about the celebration expected to follow.<\/p>\n

The opening will mark the end of one chapter of the Mosquito Road story \u2014 and the beginning of another.<\/p>\n

For decades, the old bridge has been a familiar landmark suspended above the South Fork American River. Soon, it will become the historic bridge beside the road rather than the road itself.<\/p>\n

And for Mosquito and Swansboro residents, the new bridge will mean something far more practical: two lanes, modern infrastructure and a safer connection home.<\/strong><\/p>\n
