Volunteers and supporters spend time acquiring, installing and maintaining campaign materials, she said.

“But destroying or stealing campaign signs is not political debate,” Posey said in her statement.

She is asking anyone who witnessed suspicious activity in the area, has surveillance-camera footage or knows who may have removed the signs to contact her privately. Certified election results reported by The Ballot Book show Gaines received 47.1% of the vote and Posey 24.8%, with Greg Clark and Robert Deitz II also competing in the primary.

The Sacramento Bee likewise reported that Gaines and Posey emerged as the two leading candidates in the June primary and would face one another in the general election.

Posey has campaigned on issues including county budgeting, development, wildfire preparedness, insurance reform and protecting the rural character of District 4. Her campaign identifies Shingle Springs and Rescue as communities where she has lived and says she has spent more than 20 years in El Dorado County.

Campaign-finance records also show that signs and campaign materials have been a documented part of Posey’s campaign spending. Earlier campaign filings reported expenditures for signs and printed outreach materials, along with an in-kind contribution of campaign sign supplies from a Shingle Springs resident.

‘Debate me. Vote against me.’

Posey framed the reported theft as a matter separate from the political disagreements that naturally accompany a contested local election.

“We should be able to have a spirited local election without resorting to this kind of behavior,” she said.

Her message to whoever may have taken the signs was blunt:

“Disagree with me if you want.
