MOSQUITO-SWANSBORO, Calif. \u2014<\/strong> A reported mountain lion attack that killed an adult livestock guardian dog has prompted renewed warnings among homesteaders and livestock owners in the Mosquito-Swansboro area of El Dorado County.<\/p>\n The incident was reported Friday night, Sept. 11, in the El Dorado County Homesteading and Cooperative<\/strong> community. The person who posted the warning, Heather Mari Bolen, emphasized that the dog was not hers and that she was sharing the information to alert other residents.<\/p>\n \u201cFor those of us with not only livestock and LGDs, but also other pets and little ones, the heads up can make a difference,\u201d Bolen wrote.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n LGD is commonly used to refer to a livestock guardian dog<\/strong>, an animal kept with livestock to help deter predators.<\/p>\n The reported attack comes in an area where residents routinely live alongside mountain lions, black bears and other wildlife. Mosquito and Swansboro are rural, heavily forested communities on the western slope of El Dorado County, where homes, small farms and livestock properties can overlap with wildlife habitat.<\/p>\n There was no publicly available California Department of Fish and Wildlife incident report located Saturday confirming the reported death of the dog or identifying a specific mountain lion involved.<\/p>\n That distinction is important. CDFW treats confirmed attacks on livestock or domestic animals as depredation<\/strong> and investigates reported incidents. The department says property owners should report suspected or actual mountain lion depredation involving livestock or pets.<\/p>\n CDFW also notes that mountain lions are generally elusive and avoid people, but conflicts can occur when the animals encounter livestock or pets near the wildland-urban interface.<\/p>\n The agency recommends securing livestock and large outdoor pets in sturdy, covered shelters at night and taking steps to reduce conditions that can attract mountain lions, including deer and other potential prey.<\/p>\n Bolen’s warning also described what she said was a second serious dog attack in the neighborhood within approximately 18 months.<\/p>\n According to her account, a nearby resident previously ran outside after hearing that her dog was being attacked by a mountain lion and intervened to save the animal.<\/p>\n Bolen also described a bear incident at her own home approximately two years ago, saying a bear tore away portions of an exterior wall while attempting to reach a closed container of dog food inside an enclosed sunroom.<\/p>\n The accounts illustrate a recurring challenge for residents living in El Dorado County’s forested communities: wildlife can move from surrounding habitat directly into residential areas where livestock, dogs, pet food and other potential attractants are present.<\/p>\n CDFW says mountain lions primarily prey on larger wildlife such as deer and elk but can opportunistically hunt smaller livestock and pets. Signs associated with mountain lion predation can include bites to the back of the neck or skull, tufts of fur removed from the carcass and drag marks leading toward a more secluded location.<\/p>\n The department recommends that residents:<\/p>\n Residents who encounter a mountain lion should not run or turn their backs on the animal<\/strong>. CDFW recommends facing the animal, making loud noises and attempting to make yourself appear larger while giving the mountain lion an opportunity to escape.<\/p>\n The reported Mosquito-Swansboro incident is particularly significant for residents who keep goats, sheep, poultry, horses or other livestock and rely on guardian dogs as part of their predator-management strategy.<\/p>\n A livestock guardian dog can provide an important layer of protection, but the presence of an LGD does not eliminate the possibility of a predator attack.<\/p>\n CDFW specifically identifies livestock protection animals as one of several tools that can be used to reduce conflicts with mountain lions. The department also provides technical assistance and recommends preventative measures for property owners experiencing depredation.<\/p>\n California law also contains specific provisions concerning mountain lions caught attacking livestock or domestic animals. Under Fish and Game Code Section 4807, a mountain lion encountered while actively pursuing, injuring or killing livestock or a domestic animal may be taken under specified circumstances, with the incident required to be reported to CDFW within 72 hours.<\/p>\n That provision does not mean residents should attempt to confront a mountain lion themselves.
