South Lake Tahoe mayor begins jail sentence after Nevada conviction<\/h3>\n

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. \u2014<\/strong> South Lake Tahoe Mayor Cody Bass was sentenced Tuesday to 45 days in Douglas County Jail following his misdemeanor harassment conviction stemming from a confrontation outside a Stateline bar last year.<\/p>\n

Bass must serve 10 days immediately<\/strong>. The remaining 35 days were suspended for two years, meaning they will not be served as long as he complies with the conditions imposed by the court.<\/p>\n

The sentencing followed an Aug. 13 bench-trial verdict in Tahoe Justice Court. Judge Richard Glasson found Bass guilty of misdemeanor harassment but acquitted him of a separate trespassing charge. An assault charge initially filed after the September 2025 incident had previously been dropped.<\/p>\n

Bass’ attorney, Adam Spicer, has said the defense intends to appeal the conviction. Spicer previously argued that the verdict did not align with the evidence presented at trial.<\/p>\n

Jail, fine and restrictions<\/h3>\n

In addition to the jail sentence, Bass was ordered to pay $1,127<\/strong> and comply with a series of conditions during the two-year suspended-sentence period.<\/p>\n

Those conditions include:<\/p>\n

  • No contact with the victim.<\/li>\n
  • No alcohol or marijuana use.<\/li>\n
  • Random drug and alcohol testing.<\/li>\n
  • Compliance with search and seizure provisions.<\/li>\n
  • A prohibition on entering the Stateline “Casino Corridor,” an area extending from Kahle Drive to the California-Nevada state line.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The restrictions are particularly significant for a South Lake Tahoe elected official whose community sits immediately across the state line from the Nevada casino district.<\/p>\n

    What happened outside Tahoe AleWorX?<\/h3>\n

    The case dates to the night of Sept. 25, 2025, when Bass encountered a bouncer outside Tahoe AleWorX in Stateline.<\/p>\n

    Bass initially contacted authorities and said he had been assaulted. Investigators subsequently reviewed surveillance footage and interviewed witnesses before the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office filed misdemeanor charges of trespassing and harassment. The original assault allegation against Bass was later dropped.<\/p>\n

    At trial, video footage showed Bass and the bouncer engaged in a heated exchange outside the establishment. Bass maintained that he never entered the business and said he was attempting to resolve previous problems with the employee.<\/p>\n

    After the conviction, Bass told the judge that he would continue to question his decision not to testify during the bench trial and expressed regret over how the encounter unfolded. South Tahoe Now reported that Bass said he should have de-escalated the situation.<\/p>\n

    Bass once said he would step down if found at fault<\/h3>\n

    The conviction also revives a question Bass addressed publicly while the case was pending: whether he would resign from the City Council if he were found responsible.<\/p>\n

    During the council’s Jan. 13, 2026, reorganization meeting, Bass was retained as mayor. At that time, while the Nevada misdemeanor case remained unresolved, he said that if he were proven to be at fault, he would step down<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Bass nevertheless remains mayor following Tuesday’s sentencing.<\/p>\n

    The distinction between a criminal conviction and legal disqualification from office is important. The city has said a misdemeanor conviction unrelated to official duties does not automatically require an elected councilmember to resign or forfeit the seat.<\/p>\n

    Roberts expected to lead city during jail term<\/h3>\n

    Bass’ incarceration will temporarily affect the city’s political leadership.<\/p>\n

    Mayor Pro Tem Keith Roberts<\/strong> is expected to serve as acting mayor while Bass is in jail. The City of South Lake Tahoe has characterized the Nevada case as a personal matter unrelated to Bass’ duties or conduct as a councilmember.<\/p>\n

    The city’s current council roster lists Bass as mayor and Roberts as mayor pro tem. Bass’ council term expires in December 2026<\/strong>, according to the city’s official council information.<\/p>\n

    The arrangement means South Lake Tahoe will continue operating with its elected council while its mayor serves a criminal sentence in neighboring Nevada.<\/p>\n

    A turbulent year for South Lake Tahoe politics<\/h3>\n

    Bass’ legal case has unfolded against an unusually turbulent period for South Lake Tahoe government.<\/p>\n

    Bass became mayor in October 2025 after then-Mayor Tamara Wallace resigned amid a public controversy involving her admission that she had taken money from the Lake Tahoe Community Presbyterian Church, where she worked. Wallace also called on Bass to resign over his pending Nevada case.<\/p>\n

    The City Council subsequently selected Bass to serve as mayor. In January 2026, the council voted to retain him as mayor for the year, with Councilmember Scott Robbins casting the lone dissenting vote. Keith Roberts was selected as mayor pro tem.<\/p>\n

    The current council includes Bass, Roberts, Scott Robbins, David Jinkens and Heather Horgan. The city lists Bass, Robbins and Horgan with terms expiring in December 2026, while Roberts and Jinkens have terms extending through 2028.<\/p>\n

    Earlier legal trouble<\/h3>\n

    Tuesday’s sentence is not Bass’ first criminal case.<\/p>\n

    In September 2021, California Highway Patrol officers arrested Bass near Meyers after finding him asleep in a Tesla and investigating suspected drug impairment. Initial reports described substances that appeared to be cocaine and methamphetamine; subsequent testing identified ketamine and MDMA. Bass disputed the initial characterization of the substances.<\/p>\n

    That earlier case is separate from the Nevada harassment conviction and should not be conflated with the current sentence.<\/p>\n

    For residents of South Lake Tahoe and the broader El Dorado County region, however, the immediate issue is more straightforward: their mayor is now serving a jail sentence in Nevada while remaining legally seated on the city council.<\/p>\n

    Bass’ appeal could ultimately change the legal status of the conviction. For now, the sentence imposed Tuesday remains in effect.<\/p>\n
