KYBURZ, Calif. — A head-on collision involving a Chevrolet Corvette and a Toyota RAV4 injured both drivers Monday morning and disrupted traffic on U.S. Highway 50 west of Kyburz, according to reports citing the California Highway Patrol.

The collision was reported at approximately 7:49 a.m. Oct. 19, along the mountain highway that connects communities in western El Dorado County with the Lake Tahoe region. The crash occurred about 2.5 miles west of Kyburz, according to reporting by KCRA.

The circumstances leading to the collision were not immediately clear.

Injuries Reported, Highway Temporarily Closed

The California Highway Patrol characterized the injuries as serious, according to CBS Sacramento. Both drivers reportedly sustained injuries, and at least one was transported to a hospital for treatment. Authorities had not released further details about their identities or medical conditions in the reports available Monday.

Initial CHP information also indicated that one vehicle may have left the roadway and entered the water. That detail had not been fully clarified in the available reporting.

The crash prompted a highway closure while emergency responders worked at the scene and authorities investigated. A CHP traffic alert, known as a SIG Alert, was issued at approximately 8:29 a.m., according to reporting by Hoodline.

U.S. Highway 50 was subsequently reported reopened in the Kyburz area, according to 2 News Nevada. The closure and response nevertheless disrupted travel through the mountain corridor during the morning.

Investigation Underway

The California Highway Patrol’s Placerville office is responsible for investigating traffic collisions along this stretch of U.S. Highway 50.

As of Monday, no official explanation had been released for what caused the Corvette and RAV4 to collide head-on. Investigators had not publicly established whether either vehicle crossed the centerline, experienced a mechanical problem or was affected by another factor.

The possibility that a vehicle entered the water also underscores the challenges of responding to serious collisions along the South Fork American River canyon, where steep terrain and limited alternative routes can complicate emergency operations and traffic management.

Drivers traveling between Placerville, Kyburz and the Lake Tahoe region should check current road conditions before departure, particularly when emergency closures affect the highway.
