What began as a conversation between the two women grew into a broader discussion involving several members of Fonseca’s family, including his brother, Frank Fonseca.

Kualii said she first met Frank Fonseca years ago on Hawaiʻi Island, adding a personal dimension to an evening centered on family, friendship and the artist’s far-reaching cultural connections.

“It was a special evening of remembrance, storytelling, and reflection on the remarkable life and enduring legacy of an artist whose work continues to resonate with so many people,” Kualii said in her account of the gathering.

A Shingle Springs tribal citizen who transformed Native art

Fonseca, who lived from 1946 to 2006, was born in Sacramento and was of Nisenan Maidu, Hawaiian and Portuguese ancestry. He was an enrolled citizen of the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians, connecting his artistic legacy directly to El Dorado County.

His career spanned a wide range of styles, subjects and materials. Rather than conforming to narrow expectations of what Native American art should look like, Fonseca drew on Indigenous traditions while incorporating contemporary imagery, abstraction and commentary on American history.

His most recognizable body of work featured Coyote, a trickster figure in Indigenous storytelling. Beginning in the late 1970s, Fonseca placed Coyote in unexpected modern settings, using the character to explore identity, cultural continuity and the relationship between Native traditions and contemporary life.

The Gorman Museum of Native American Art at UC Davis, which presented a retrospective drawn from the Shingle Springs Band’s collection in 2025, described Fonseca’s work as a career marked by openness to new influences while remaining connected to his Nisenan Maidu heritage. The exhibition included work from several major series, spanning his early depictions of Native traditions to his later experiments with abstraction. Gorman Museum of Native American Art.

Art confronting California’s Gold Rush history

Fonseca’s legacy extends beyond the playful, brightly colored Coyote paintings that brought him widespread recognition.

His 1992 series, Discovery of Gold and Souls in California, confronted the devastating consequences of California’s mission system and Gold Rush for Indigenous communities. Through mixed-media compositions incorporating gold leaf, dark crosses and red oxide, Fonseca addressed the physical, emotional and spiritual destruction inflicted on Native peoples.

The subject carries particular significance in the Sierra Nevada foothills, where Gold Rush history remains central to the identity of El Dorado County. The region’s celebrated mining past also sits alongside the history of Native communities whose lives, lands and cultural systems were profoundly disrupted by colonization and the influx of settlers.

Fonseca’s work offered a different perspective on that history, challenging audiences to consider whose experiences are celebrated and whose suffering is often overlooked in familiar accounts of California’s development.

He also explored Native creation stories, traditional dance, basketry-inspired designs and rock art. His evolving artistic practice demonstrated that Indigenous identity and contemporary experimentation were not opposing forces, but complementary sources of creative expression.

Preserving Fonseca’s work for future generations

The preservation of Fonseca’s work has become an important part of his continuing legacy.

The Autry Museum of the American West in Los Angeles announced in July 2016 that it had acquired more than 900 pieces from the artist’s estate. The collection included approximately 500 original artworks, 19 large-scale murals, 69 sketchbooks, prints, posters, collages, journals and personal papers. The acquisition established the museum as a major center for studying Fonseca’s work and creative process. Autry Museum of the American West acquisition announcement.

The Shingle Springs Band also acquired a substantial collection of Fonseca’s artwork, bringing an important portion of his life’s work under the stewardship of his tribal community.

That collection received renewed public attention through Olé Ham Nees: We Call Him Coyote, a solo exhibition at the Gorman Museum of Native American Art that ran from Feb. 12 through Aug. 31, 2025. The exhibition presented work from the tribe’s collection and traced Fonseca’s development across several decades.

The two collections serve complementary purposes: preserving Fonseca’s artistic and personal records for research and exhibition while maintaining a direct connection between his work and the community of which he was a member.

A legacy rooted in El Dorado County

For the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians, Fonseca’s legacy is more than a matter of artistic achievement. His work reflects the continuing relationship between Indigenous identity, cultural knowledge and contemporary life.

His paintings challenged audiences to move beyond stereotypes, reconsider familiar historical narratives and recognize the complexity of Native experiences. His willingness to experiment with different artistic approaches also ensured that his career could not be reduced to a single style or subject.

The gathering at the tribe’s Exhibit and Collections Center brought those themes into a personal setting, allowing family members and longtime friends to share memories alongside broader reflections on his influence.

For El Dorado County residents, Fonseca’s story offers a reminder that the region’s cultural history extends well beyond the Gold Rush. It also includes the enduring presence, creativity and contributions of Indigenous communities whose histories are inseparable from the land.

More than two decades after his death, Fonseca’s work continues to connect generations of artists, scholars, family members and community citizens. Through exhibitions, archival preservation and gatherings such as the one in Shingle Springs, his artistic vision remains alive — grounded in his heritage but never confined by expectations.

The Lolmen Gallery operates in alignment with the Shingle Springs Rancheria main tribal administration schedules, which are Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

Because the gallery is housed inside tribal government facilities, hours can occasionally shift around major tribal holidays, cultural events, or private community gatherings.

Tips for Planning Your Visit

Confirm Before Driving Up: If you are coming from out of town specifically to see the art collections, it is highly recommended to call the tribal offices at (530) 676-1865 to ensure the curatorial staff or cultural specialists are available to open the display space.

From his iconic Coyote paintings to powerful works confronting California’s Gold Rush history, Harry Fonseca reshaped contemporary Native American art.
