Investigators say many of the luxury goods were purchased using money taken from the employer.

Turning luxury purchases into cash

Prosecutors say Sherman eventually began reselling designer merchandise purchased with her employer’s money through online sales platforms.

The transactions effectively converted merchandise purchased with allegedly stolen funds into cash.

According to the federal announcement, Sherman earned more than $450,000 through one online platform during a nine-month period in 2025.

That activity added another dimension to the investigation, which involved tracing not only the original expenditures but also the subsequent resale of the merchandise.

Federal investigation and guilty plea

The investigation was conducted by the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation division, with assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Marshals Service Asset Forfeiture Program.

U.S. Attorney Eric Grant announced Sherman’s guilty plea on Nov. 2.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Dhruv M. Sharma and Kevin C. Khasigian are prosecuting the case in the Eastern District of California.

As part of her plea agreement, Sherman is subject to forfeiture and restitution totaling nearly $18 million to her former employer.

That obligation represents the financial recovery component of the agreement. It should not be confused with money already recovered or restitution already paid.

What happens next?

Sherman is scheduled to appear for sentencing before U.S. District Judge William B. Shubb on March 22, 2027.

Wire fraud carries a maximum statutory penalty of 20 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine.

However, the maximum penalty is not necessarily the sentence she will receive.

The judge will determine the appropriate sentence after considering applicable statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which account for circumstances surrounding the offense and the defendant.

The court will also address the financial consequences outlined in the plea agreement, including forfeiture and restitution.

A case with a significant local connection

Although the alleged victim was a retired Bay Area venture capitalist, the investigation has a direct connection to El Dorado County.

The residence searched by federal authorities was in El Dorado Hills, where prosecutors say Sherman used proceeds from the fraud to finance improvements to a multimillion-dollar home and maintain an extensive collection of luxury merchandise.

For residents, the case is a reminder that financial crimes do not always involve sophisticated outside criminal organizations or elaborate schemes originating somewhere else.

Sometimes, according to federal prosecutors, the opportunity comes through a position of trust, access to financial accounts and the ability to move money without immediately attracting attention.

Sherman’s guilty plea establishes her criminal responsibility for the federal wire fraud count. The remaining question is what sentence the federal court will impose and how much of the nearly $18 million will ultimately be recovered.

The next significant date in the case is March 22, 2027, when Sherman is scheduled to be sentenced in federal court.

Source Documents and Further Reading

1.
