Placerville, Calif. — The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office (EDSO) will begin its next Citizens Academy on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2026, offering local residents a chance to learn how law enforcement works — from behind-the-scenes facility tours to ride-alongs with deputies.

The free, 13-week program meets every Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the EDSO Public Safety Facility. Each session features a different instructor who will cover a range of law enforcement topics, including use of force, investigations, patrol operations, special units, and more. Participants also receive guided tours of EDSO facilities, equipment demonstrations, and direct engagement with the agency’s various units.

One of the most sought-after elements of the program is an opportunity for a ride-along with a deputy, giving attendees a firsthand perspective of patrol work. According to EDSO, that experiential component helps build mutual understanding and trust between the community and its law enforcement agency.

“Class fills up fast, so enroll today,” says EDSO. The academy is open to adults aged 18 and over, though exceptions may apply in some cases. Interested residents are encouraged to apply promptly, as spaces are limited.

Applications for the Citizens Academy can be found via the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office’s website under its community programs section. El Dorado County The EDSO also provides a Citizen’s Academy Application (PDF) on its forms page.

For questions or more information, contact Deputy Julian Sandoval, the program coordinator, at sandovalj@edso.org

A spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office emphasized the program’s importance: “This academy allows us to open a positive line of communication with our citizens,” helping to strengthen trust and demystify policing practices.

Why This Matters

  • Builds Transparency: Residents gain insight into how their local law enforcement operates, which can foster greater trust and community partnership.

  • Free Training: No cost to participate — the Sheriff’s Office covers all materials and instruction.

  • Hands-On Experience: Ride-alongs and facility tours provide practical exposure rather than just classroom theory.

  • Community Engagement: Attendees are encouraged to ask questions, voice concerns, and provide feedback — helping shape stronger community-law enforcement relations.
