CAMINO, Calif. — Authorities have released additional information following the officer-involved shooting that occurred March 12 on Mountain View Drive in Camino, identifying the suspect and the deputies injured during the confrontation.

The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office said the suspect has been identified as Steven Carter, 66, of Camino. Carter remains in stable condition and is currently in custody at a local hospital, according to officials.

Investigators also identified the deputies injured in the line of duty as Deputy J. Stillman and Deputy C. Reimche. Both deputies remain hospitalized while recovering from their injuries.

Despite the seriousness of the incident, the Sheriff’s Office said the deputies are in good spirits and grateful for the support shown by residents throughout El Dorado County.

“The department and the deputies’ families have been encouraged by the outpouring of prayers, messages, and assistance from the community,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

Incident Began With Report of Shooting at PG&E Crew

The incident began around 7:25 a.m. Thursday, March 12, when the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence in the 700 block of Mountain View Drive after a PG&E crew reported being shot at, authorities said.

One PG&E contractor was injured during the initial report and was taken to a local hospital, where the worker was treated and released the same day.

While deputies were responding to the scene, an officer-involved shooting occurred, leaving two deputies and the suspect wounded. All three were transported to hospitals for treatment, with the suspect flown by air ambulance to a regional medical center.

Authorities later confirmed there were no outstanding suspects and no continuing threat to the public.

Multi-Agency Investigation Underway

Investigators and crime scene personnel completed processing the scene on March 13, though officials said the investigation remains ongoing under the El Dorado County Critical Incident Protocol.

The multi-agency investigative team includes representatives from the El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office, Placerville Police Department, South Lake Tahoe Police Department and the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials said investigators are continuing to review evidence and witness statements to develop a full and unbiased account of the incident.

Community Support for Injured Deputies

Community members wishing to support the injured deputies are encouraged to contact Thrive with 10-35, a nonprofit organization that provides assistance to law-enforcement personnel and their families during times of crisis.

The Sheriff’s Office also thanked several agencies that responded to the incident, including El Dorado County Fire, Cal Fire, the Placerville Police Department, South Lake Tahoe Police Department, Folsom Police Department, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office, and the California Highway Patrol.

Officials said both deputies remain surrounded by family and loved ones as they begin their recovery.
